JD Vance Advocates for Reduced Legal Immigration, Defends trump’s Executive Actions at Turning Point USA Event
COLUMBUS, OH – Ohio Senator JD Vance called for a significant reduction in legal immigration levels during an appearance at a Turning Point USA event at Ohio State University on Tuesday. Vance stated the current number of legal immigrants admitted to the U.S. is “far less than what we’ve been accepting,” but declined to specify a desired numerical target when questioned by an audience member.
Vance criticized the Biden management’s immigration policies, arguing they have strained the “social fabric of the United States.” He emphasized the need for societal “cohesion” and assimilation for newcomers, stating, “Until you do that, you’ve got to be careful about any additional immigration, in my view.”
The event, held on a university campus, carried particular emotional weight following the recent shooting death of Turning point USA founder charlie Kirk. Vance stepped in to fulfill a debate role often held by Kirk. Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, made one of her first public appearances since assuming leadership of the organization, introducing Vance and urging young conservatives to remain steadfast in their beliefs. She referenced her loss, stating, “If you’re worried about losing a friend-I lost my friend. I lost my best friend,” while wearing a white “freedom” shirt similar to one Kirk often wore.
Vance also addressed foreign policy, defending former President Donald Trump’s approach to the Middle East, including a strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. He acknowledged increased U.S. military pressure on Venezuela and actions against boats allegedly transporting drugs.
When asked about Trump’s past deployment of the National Guard to Democratic-led cities and the potential for future abuse of executive power, Vance defended Trump’s actions. he pointed to Trump’s own legal challenges - charges related to retaining classified documents and attempts to subvert the 2020 election, which were later dismissed after Trump’s reelection – as justification for his targeting of political opponents. “We cannot be afraid to do something because the left might do it in the future,” Vance said. “The left is already going to do it nonetheless of whether we do it.”
