Vitamin D2 Supplements โMayโฃ Lower Vitamin D3 โฃLevels, Study Finds
Berlin – New research indicates that vitamin D2 supplementation may not be the โฃoptimal way toโฃ boost vitamin D levels, and could even reduce levels of the moreโ beneficial vitamin D3. The findings, released today, challenge conventional supplementation strategies and suggestโค vitamin D3 is highly likely more effective for most individuals.
The studyโ revealed a surprising effect: participants taking vitamin D2โฃ experienced โan approximately 18 nmol/l reduction in vitamin D3 levels compared to those who did not โฃsupplement. This is notablyโข concerningโ given โฃthat โoptimal vitamin D supply is defined as serum concentrations of 25(OH)D above 30 ng/ml, with levels below 20โ ng/ml considered a deficiency. Researchers โconcluded, “We found that vitamin D2 supplements can reduce vitamin D3 โlevels – a previously unknown effect of takingโข these preparations.”
The research โunderscores the importanceโ of โคmaintaining adequate vitamin Dโ levels, crucial forโ bone health, immune function, and overall well-being. While vitamin D deficiency is widespread, experts caution against attempting to rapidly increase levels through “bolus doses,” citing potential โhealth risks. โขthe study’s โคfindings are expectedโ to prompt a reevaluation of vitamin D supplementation guidelines andโฃ a greater emphasis on vitamin D3 as the preferred formโ for most people.
