Insurance Coverage Lapse Leaves Woman Facing Weight Regain After Ozempic Success
WAUSAU, WI – A wisconsin woman, identified as Bobbi, experienced significant weight loss with the GLP-1 medication Ozempic, only to see her insurance coverage discontinued, leading to a return to her previous weight and concerns about unregulated alternatives.
Bobbi’s insurance provider, TeamCare, declined to comment on the reason for the coverage change.However, a TeamCare employee reportedly stated the company stopped covering medications used solely for weight loss approximately a year ago.
“So I was desperate. I was looking on the black market for anything similar to it. I was actually looking to see if anybody was selling their Ozempic,” Bobbi told NewsChannel7.
unable to afford Ozempic through conventional channels, Bobbi turned to a third-party weight loss drug, which was three times cheaper. Dr. Davis warned that these medications are ”not technically FDA regulated,” and concerns exist regarding proper manufacturing,dosage,and absorption.
“So we don’t always know without a doubt that the medications are being made properly, that they’re at the correct dose, that they’re being prescribed in a way that is going to be absorbed correctly,” Dr. Davis explained.
Bobbi reported the third-party drug was ineffective, causing vomiting and providing no noticeable physical changes. She also received an incorrect dosage and lacked follow-up care from providers. She has been off all weight loss drugs as April 2024.
Bobbi had successfully reduced her clothing size from an 18 to a 10 while on Ozempic, but has as returned to a size 18. “I just wanted to do it for me. So I’d have a better quality of life, lose weight, gain confidence-and that’s all gone again,” she said. ”It’s like the golden ticket. it really is.”
The case highlights growing concerns about access to GLP-1 medications, initially developed for diabetes management but increasingly prescribed for weight loss, and the potential risks associated with seeking unregulated alternatives.
