Teenager Receives Life Sentence for Deadly Winnipeg Attacks

Manitoba⁣ Teenager Sentenced to Life for 2022⁣ Killings

A ⁣Manitoba teenager was sentenced⁤ to life in prison on ⁢Wednesday for ⁤the 2022 murders of three people in Winnipeg. The judge highlighted the brutal ⁢nature of ⁢the crimes, noting the killings were sequential ⁤and unprovoked.

the victims were Marvin William Felix, 54, from the Berens River First Nation; Danielle Dawn⁤ Ballantyne, 36, a mother of four from Misipawistik Cree Nation; and Troy ⁣Baguley, ⁣51, originally from Saskatchewan.

video evidence presented in court showed felix, who was in a wheelchair, being beaten by the youth while sleeping outside a Winnipeg hotel. His sister, marva George, travelled from Berens ‌River for the sentencing and ‍wore a hoodie bearing her brother’s image, which read: “Forever in ‍our⁢ hearts.” She described her brother as an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed sharing game with people he met on the streets of Winnipeg. While satisfied with the sentencing, Ms. George emphasized the need⁤ for the Manitoba government to improve public safety.

Ballantyne, standing 5-feet-2-inches tall, was found with extensive head trauma in her apartment building. Baguley was beaten for seven minutes and died months after the attack.

The teenager, described as approximately six feet tall with acne, listened silently as‌ the ⁣sentance was delivered. His defense lawyer, Laura Robinson, had argued for a‍ sentence equivalent to a 10-year prison term.

Pre-sentencing ⁣reports detailed‍ several mitigating factors, including the youth’s Indigenous heritage, diagnoses of attention deficit and cognitive disorders, and intoxication with vodka and Xanax at the ⁢time of the crimes. ⁣He had previously expressed regret for his actions during a July hearing.

The court ruled the ⁤teenager, who had already spent three years in jail awaiting trial, will be ineligible for parole for seven years.

Canadian Airports Hacked to Broadcast Pro-Hamas Message

Pro-Hamas Messages Displayed After Cyberattacks at Three canadian Airports

TORONTO – Cyberattacks targeted digital display systems at Toronto Pearson,⁢ Montreal ‍Trudeau, and Calgary International ‍airports on Tuesday, resulting in the display of pro-Hamas messages and doctored images.⁤ The messages, which included images of militants and Israeli Prime Minister ⁤Benjamin Netanyahu, were crudely photoshopped ⁤around luminous red text.

The incident was ‍claimed by a user ⁤on social media, who spent⁣ Wednesday celebrating media coverage of the airport⁢ disruptions. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrator ⁢or group responsible.

The attacks highlight longstanding concerns ⁣about Canada’s vulnerability‌ too⁢ cybercrime. Experts have described Canada and its public institutions as a⁣ “high-value, low-risk target” for cybercriminals, including state-sponsored actors. A recent forecast from the Canadian Center for Cyber Security indicated that state-sponsored cyberthreat actors are “vrey likely” ‍targeting critical infrastructure networks ‌in Canada and allied countries in planning for potential disruptive attacks. The centre identified China’s cyber program as ⁣the most sophisticated ⁢and active state threat to Canada⁢ currently.

David Shipley, CEO of Beauceron Security, a New Brunswick-based cybersecurity ‍firm, characterized Tuesday’s hack as a “stunt” rather than a serious attack, noting the absence⁤ of ransom demands.⁤ He also pointed to the perpetrator’s self-promotion ⁤on social media as evidence of inexperience.⁣ “When you’re victorious, you generally don’t need to self-promote,” shipley said. “It’s ⁣like ‍it’s the cyber equivalent of someone⁤ running around saying ‘I’m‍ cool’ – the moment⁣ that you say you’re‌ cool, you probably aren’t.”

Shipley further criticized the ⁣lack ‌of resources allocated to cybersecurity for local police departments and RCMP ‍detachments, stating, ‍”How is it [okay] in any way, shape or form for a 21st-century country to expect these tiny police forces to have any resources to help⁢ the airports in⁤ this case? It’s beyond ludicrous and it just highlights ‍we’re not a serious country.”

The incident underscores the growing threat of cyberattacks against critical infrastructure ⁢and the need for increased investment in cybersecurity measures.

OpenAI Seeks Canadian Data Centres to Boost AI Capabilities

OpenAI Signals Interest in Expanding Canadian AI Infrastructure

MONTREAL ⁣- OpenAI is ⁢indicating a willingness to invest in Canada’s artificial⁣ intelligence infrastructure, even as it faces a copyright⁤ lawsuit from Canadian media outlets, according to recent statements. The company acknowledges a need to stimulate demand ⁣for AI infrastructure within Canada to support the country’s push for “digital sovereignty.”

The Liberal government is actively seeking ⁤to bolster‌ homegrown tech companies through procurement initiatives. Ottawa recently signed a non-binding agreement with ⁣Toronto-based AI ‍firm Cohere Inc.⁢ to explore AI applications⁢ within the public service. Prime Minister Mark Carney has also championed a sovereign cloud initiative aimed at increasing Canadian⁤ control over computing power.

Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon has described digital sovereignty ⁣as “the most pressing‌ policy and democratic ⁤issue of our time,” emphasizing that achieving‌ it requires collaboration with international ‍partners, including the United States.

Dev⁤ Saxena, a senior global affairs advisor⁣ with ‌OpenAI in Ottawa,⁤ stated in‍ an interview that‍ “global players” are essential to building Canada’s sovereign AI‌ capacity. ⁢”To actually ⁤build out some of this sovereign capacity in Canada, under ⁤Canadian jurisdiction, you actually do need global players at the table,” Saxena said. “No country can do it end-to-end. It’s ⁣just way too complicated of ⁢a supply chain, and way too⁤ expensive.”

Though, OpenAI⁢ is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with The Globe and‍ Mail and other Canadian media‌ companies, which‌ allege copyright infringement due to the use of news content⁣ to train its AI models. OpenAI maintains its practices are‌ permissible under copyright law and has argued that ontario courts⁤ lack jurisdiction ⁢over the case, ‌as the company does ‌not conduct business in the province.

Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown: A Missed Opportunity for Affordable Housing

Toronto’s Eglinton Crosstown LRT Stations Under Fire for Missed Development Potential

Toronto, ON – As teh Eglinton Crosstown LRT nears its anticipated 2025 opening, scrutiny is mounting over a key design flaw: the lack of integrated development above many of its stations. Despite the potential for increased housing and revenue generation, several stations, including Cedarvale, are being built as standalone structures, raising concerns about a missed chance to address Toronto’s housing crisis and fund future transit projects.

The Cedarvale station, a “gleaming glass box” situated at a major transportation intersection alongside the Allen Expressway and a TTC subway line, exemplifies the issue. Currently planned as a single-storey building, the station’s design contrasts sharply with examples in othre global cities.

Experts point to successful models like New York’s Hudson Yards, which utilized a massive platform built over active rail lines to support multiple towers. This approach allowed for both spacious passenger flow and the structural capacity for significant development.

The benefits of linking transit and development are well-documented. Cities like Tokyo and Hong Kong have successfully leveraged real estate revenue to fund and even profit from their transit systems, with Hong Kong’s MTR network being a prime example. The article notes that the MTR’s real estate activities are so substantial it “could be called a developer that runs trains.”

Even London has a history of building up around transit, with the Covent Garden station originally built in 1904 with three storeys above ground, and a fourth floor approved for addition in 2018.

Critics argue that the Crosstown’s small station footprints are hindering future development potential. The article highlights that the standard urban pattern involves replacing modest developments with taller buildings as land values increase, but the Crosstown’s initial designs are making this process more tough. The “glass box” aesthetic, while visually appealing, is also reportedly more challenging to build upon than traditional building structures.

The Ontario government is urged to learn from this experience and prioritize integrated development in future transit projects to maximize both housing supply and financial sustainability. While Torontonians may be relieved to finally see the Crosstown operational – with hopes for a 2025 opening – the article emphasizes that the line’s design flaws should not be overlooked.

IPro Loan Scandal: Lawsuit Seeks $4 Million Repayment

iPro Realty Founders⁤ Accused of Deceit⁣ in $3.17 Million Loan Scheme, Lawsuit Claims

TORONTO - The founders of now-disgraced iPro Realty are facing allegations of deceit and breach of trust in connection with $3.17 million in loans taken from investors, ‍according to a claim filed by lawyer Nancy⁢ Tourgis of Solmon Rothbart Tourgis Slodovnick LLP. The lawsuit alleges that alves and Colucci knowingly engaged in deceptive conduct as brokers.

The claim details how⁢ the Mitzithras family – Georgios,⁣ Tereza,⁤ and their son Rob ⁤- invested $1.9 million through an “Investors Agreement” with Hippo ‌Holdings, believing‌ the funds would be reinvested⁣ in areas including cash advances ⁣to iPro real estate salespersons ⁢against future commissions, mortgages, and real estate investments.

Hippo Holdings functioned as the⁣ primary ⁢vehicle for these cash advances, a ⁢practice common at iPro where agents could‍ borrow against anticipated earnings (frequently‍ enough delayed by weeks or months between a deal and final ‌payment). Perry Staikopoulos⁤ and his brother Ted invested a further $1.571 million⁤ under similar agreements, at an interest rate of approximately 9 per cent annually.

A separate arrangement involved Mr. Kocev, through his company 360 Real⁤ Estate Management services Inc., and his ⁤mother Linda (a long-time iPro realtor), who were owed $600,000 via promissory notes from iPro. Both mr. Kocev and Perry Staikopoulos held positions as branch managers at iPro ‌- in Toronto and Burlington respectively.

According to Mr. Kocev, he attempted to alert the Real⁤ Estate‍ Council of Ontario (RECO)⁤ upon discovering “irregularities” regarding⁢ the trust funds.”Legal counsel⁣ was retained, who contacted RECO on July 13, 2025. ‍The only response received from RECO was that a confidential process was underway,” he stated in an emailed statement.

RECO, however, claims it became aware of the trust fund⁣ issues as early as May 19, but did not publicly disclose the information until August 14.

In the wake ⁤of the iPro scandal, Skybound Realty was established, with Mr. Kocev now serving as broker ‍owner and president, and ⁢Anissa⁢ Ho (formerly ‍of iPro’s Mississauga ‌office) as broker of record. ⁢Skybound Realty received its brokerage license from‌ RECO on August 12,⁤ just two days before the public proclamation of iPro’s financial difficulties.

Mr. kocev maintains that ”None of the founders of⁤ Skybound Realty had any control, ⁣access or visibility into the trust accounts or banking operations of iPro Realty,” and that Skybound was created as a entirely independent entity. He added⁣ that ‍Skybound’s management is “participating fully and willingly with ⁢all regulatory authorities.”

Skybound Realty currently⁢ employs 139 realtors,‍ largely comprised ‍of former iPro agents, and ‍operates on a similar low-fee business model, eschewing traditional commission-sharing arrangements. The statement from Mr.Kocev⁢ does not detail how he initially became aware ⁣of the alleged irregularities at iPro.

Lightspeed Settlement: Quebec Class-Action Lawsuit Details

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 4, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Montreal’s Lightspeed Commerce Inc. has reached a proposed $11-million settlement to resolve a class-action lawsuit in Quebec alleging misrepresentation of ‌its financial performance, the company announced. The agreement, reached in June, avoids any admission of liability from ⁢Lightspeed, ⁣which has ⁣consistently denied the claims.

The lawsuit‌ stemmed ⁤from a significant⁤ drop in Lightspeed’s share⁤ price ⁢following a critical report⁢ published⁢ in 2021 by Spruce Point Capital Management. Shareholders alleged the company ⁣overstated its financial health, prompting the ‌legal ⁢action. A similar suit in the U.S. was dismissed earlier this year, with Lightspeed previously ‌stating‍ the allegations lacked ⁤legal‍ merit and viewing that‌ dismissal ⁤as a company victory. The proposed settlement requires approval from a Quebec Superior Court, with a hearing ⁢scheduled for November 21 ⁣in ⁢Montreal. Lightspeed (LSPD-T)‍ maintains its position that it did not engage in wrongdoing.
