Coromandel Roads Affected by Weather: several roads in the Coromandel region are experiencing disruptions due to recent weather events, including slips and flooding.
Tapu Coroglen Rd has experienced rockfalls, as reported by the Thames Coromandel District Council. State highway 25a between Kลpu and Hikuai has a slip that is partially blocking one lane, with New Zealand Transport Agency crews on site. Surface flooding has been reported on Hikuai Settlement Rd and Hot water Beach Rd.
The Tairua River flooded around 3 am, leading to a brief closure of SH25 near Prescott’s garage. However, the road has since reopened due to a favorable tide. the Kauaeranga River reached a peak of 8.5 meters overnight, triggering a first-stage alarm, but its level is now decreasing.
The district council noted that 156mm of rain was recorded at the Pinnacles, and the Pinnacles Hut was closed overnight due to the weather conditions. As of midday, many weather watches and warnings previously issued by MetService had expired. A strong wind watch remains in effect for the Chatham Islands until Thursday morning.
Bay of Plenty Civil Defense has acknowledged reports of unplanned power outages across the region attributed to the weather,with site investigations ongoing. They have also received reports of surface flooding and fallen trees, urging the public to report any storm-related damage to their local council. Residents are advised to remain vigilant while traveling due to potential poor visibility, surface flooding, slips, and tough driving conditions, as MetService New Zealand warnings are still in place.
