The San Antonio Zoo over the weekendโ introduced the world to its newest mascot, aโ giraffe named Savanna.
Savanna made her debut during โฃa Saturday event that โalso featured other Alamo City mascots, including H-E-Buddy, Whataburgerโsโ Whataguy and UTSAโs rowdy the Roadrunner.
Savanna โis the San Antonio Zooโs secondโ mascot, with the โคother being โCowboy โขthe โRhino. However, officials said โSavannah is more than just a figurehead for the nationally recognized zoological โฃpark. They hope sheโ will bring public awareness to the plight of giraffes โin the wild.
โGiraffe populations are in crisis worldwide, withโ habitats shrinking โขby nearly 90% over the past 300 years and local extinctions already occurringโ inโข several African countries,โ San Antonio โขzoo officials said in a statement.
The San Antonio Zoo has prioritized giraffe conservation in recent years, with a portionโ of โฃproceeds from the zooโs giraffe โฃfeeding times, overnight stays at its Spekboom Lodge โand tickets for itsโข Conserfari tours โฃgoing to the Giraffe โConservation Foundation, the only global organization dedicated exclusively to protecting wild giraffes.
โThrough Savanna, the zooโฃ hopes to spark conversations, inspire action, and remind the community that everyone has a role to play in securing aโข future for wildlife,โ officials added.
