Champions League Playoffs: Real Madrid, PSG, Atalanta & Galatasaray Advance

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 26, 2026
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

Real Madrid advanced to the Champions League Round of 16 despite a setback in the second leg of their playoff tie against Benfica, winning 2-1 on Wednesday and securing a 3-1 aggregate victory. The match, played at the Santiago Bernabéu, saw Aurélien Tchouaméni and Vinícius Júnior score for the Spanish side, while António Silva found the net for Benfica.

The victory came at a cost for Real Madrid, however, as star forward Kylian Mbappé was absent from the squad due to a continuing knee injury. The French international experienced discomfort during training on Tuesday, forcing him to miss the crucial match against the Portuguese side, according to reports from ESPN and Goal.com. Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa indicated that Mbappé’s absence would be “longer” than a few days, though a precise return date remains uncertain.

Benfica opened the scoring in the 14th minute through António Silva, capitalizing on an early opportunity. However, Tchouaméni quickly leveled the score just two minutes later, restoring Madrid’s advantage in the tie. Vinícius Júnior then extended the lead in the 56th minute, securing the win for Los Blancos.

The match also took place against a backdrop of controversy surrounding Benfica midfielder Gianluca Prestianni, who was provisionally suspended by UEFA following accusations of racism during the first leg. Prestianni reportedly admitted to using an anti-gay slur during an exchange with Real Madrid’s Vinícius Júnior, though he denied using racist language, according to ESPN. Prestianni was not involved in Wednesday’s match.

Elsewhere in the Champions League, Paris Saint-Germain narrowly overcame Monaco, winning 5-4 on aggregate after a 2-2 draw. Mamadou Coulibaly was sent off for Monaco in the 60th minute, and Marquinhos and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored for PSG. Atalanta completed a remarkable comeback, defeating Borussia Dortmund 4-1 to advance 4-3 on aggregate, with a late penalty securing their place in the next round. Juventus and Galatasaray played out a thrilling tie, with Galatasaray ultimately progressing 7-5 on aggregate after a 3-2 victory, despite Juventus’s late fightback and a red card for Lloyd Kelly.

The Champions League Round of 16 draw is scheduled for Friday at 6 a.m. ET and will determine Real Madrid’s opponent, with Sporting CP and Manchester City as potential matchups. Atalanta will face either Arsenal or Bayern Munich, while Galatasaray will play Atlético Madrid or Barcelona/Chelsea. PSG will be drawn against either Newcastle United or Sporting CP, and Real Madrid will face Sporting or Manchester City.

Kompany Condemns Racism & Calls for Apology in Vinicius Case

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 21, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany sharply criticized Benfica’s José Mourinho on Wednesday for his response to allegations of racist abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Júnior during Tuesday’s Champions League match in Lisbon.

The controversy erupted after Vinicius, who scored the winning goal for Real Madrid, claimed Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni racially abused him following a celebration near the corner flag. Prestianni allegedly repeated the Spanish word for “monkey” (“mono”) five times, according to Kylian Mbappé, who stated he overheard the incident and that other Benfica players also witnessed it. The match was briefly halted as Vinicius reported the alleged abuse to the referee.

Mourinho subsequently downplayed the accusations, referencing Benfica legend Eusébio, who was Black, as evidence against any suggestion of racism within the club. “The biggest person in the history of this club [Eusebio] was black. This club, the last thing that it is, is racist,” Mourinho told reporters.

Kompany condemned Mourinho’s response, arguing it served to discredit Vinicius’s complaint and minimize the severity of the alleged incident. “For me, what happened next is even worse. He attacked Vinicius’ character to discredit his complaint. That is something we should not accept,” Kompany said at Bayern’s press conference.

He further challenged Mourinho’s invocation of Eusébio’s legacy, questioning the historical context of Black players in European football. “he mentions Eusébio and says that Benfica cannot be racist since he is the greatest player in its history. Do you have any idea what black players had to endure in Europe in the 60s? Were you next to Eusebio in his away games?” Kompany asked.

Kompany revealed his father had shared insights into the challenges faced by Black footballers during that era, where complaints were often impossible and success was the only path to earning respect. “My father told me that a black player in those days didn’t have the chance to make complaints as has happened with Vinícius and that his only possibility was to be better than the rest to have a little respect,” he explained.

The Bayern manager expressed his belief that a sincere apology from the perpetrator would be a crucial step toward addressing the situation. “My ideal world would be that in a case like this whoever has made a mistake could apologize and that that would have an effect on the sanction. The sanction can be one or the other, but for the person responsible to say that he was wrong and apologize is something that should affect it,” he stated.

UEFA has announced it will investigate the allegations through its Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector, but has not yet released a timeline for its findings. Benfica and Mourinho have not issued further statements regarding Kompany’s criticism as of Wednesday evening.

Benfica’s Prestianni: Phone Background & Racism Allegations vs. Vinicius Jr.

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 18, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

A photograph of Benfica’s Gianluca Prestianni challenging Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr. During a January match was reportedly the background image on the Argentinian winger’s mobile phone as recently as six days ago, according to a video circulating online. The image surfaced following allegations of racial abuse directed at Vinicius Jr. During Tuesday’s Champions League match between Benfica and Real Madrid.

The footage, originating from a Benfica team video, shows Prestianni seated next to teammate Nicolás Otamendi on a flight to Ponta Delgada in the Azores on February 12th, ahead of a Portuguese league match against Santa Clara. Prestianni’s phone, visible in his hand, displays the image of him pursuing Vinicius Jr. With the ball during the January 28th Champions League fixture at Estádio da Luz, a match Benfica won 4-2.

That victory secured Benfica’s place in the Champions League playoff round, where they faced Real Madrid on Tuesday. Real Madrid won the match 1-0, with Vinicius Jr. Scoring the decisive goal in the 50th minute. Following the goal, Vinicius Jr. Celebrated near the corner flag and engaged in an exchange with Prestianni, who briefly covered his mouth with his jersey.

According to reports, in the 51st minute and 26 seconds of the match, Vinicius Jr. Alerted French referee François Letexier to alleged racist insults from Prestianni. The referee then initiated UEFA’s anti-racism protocol, halting play for eight minutes. UEFA has since opened a formal investigation into the allegation, according to Yahoo Sports.

Kylian Mbappé has publicly called for Prestianni to be banned from the Champions League following the incident, as reported by The Real Champs. Vinicius Jr. Himself reportedly responded to the alleged abuse, stating that “racists are cowards,” according to reports from the BBC and The Guardian.

The incident occurred during the first leg of the Champions League playoff, with the return leg scheduled to be played in Madrid. The outcome of UEFA’s investigation remains pending.
