After the Pisa shock: consequences for schools demanded

The Pisa study compares the performance of 15-year-old students internationally every three years. The current results for Germany are worse than ever. This is also causing unrest in Bavaria.

The sharp drop in performance of German students in the international comparative study Pisa is also having an impact Bayern tempers rise. The current results are “already a slap in the face for Germany,” said Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Tuesday in the Bavarian state parliament. “We need to improve basic techniques in schools to achieve better education.” In addition to the opposition, teachers’ associations and the economy in the Free State also called for consequences from the worst values ever measured for Germany as part of Pisa.

“The Pisa results mercilessly reflect our outdated, rigid Bavarian school system. If the Söder government had taken countermeasures earlier, our students would be doing better today,” emphasized the education policy spokeswoman for the state parliament Greens, Gabriele Triebel. “We need more teachers and modern teaching, good all-day education and multi-professional teams – also to give every child an equal start.”

Minister of Culture Anna Stolz (Free voters) promised, at the request of the German Press Agency, to do everything in its power to counteract the drop in performance in Bavaria’s schools – even if the PISA results initially referred to the whole of Germany and not specifically to Bavaria. “We will include all scientific results here in order to be able to strengthen the basic skills in an even more targeted manner in the future.” Existing measures would be expanded and new ones created. Stolz emphasized that children and young people with a migrant background in particular should be given more help in learning to read.

“Just taking note of studies is not enough – taking a closer look and taking action is the order of the day,” warned the chairman of the Bavarian Philology Association, Michael Schwegerl. The further decline in reading skills is particularly alarming because good reading skills are the basis for a successful school career, later professional life and participation in social life. The chairwoman of the Bavarian teachers’ association BLLV, Simone Fleischmann, also called for individual support for young talent and better working conditions for teachers: “The analyzes are enough now. We finally need action!”

The Bavarian Business Association also sees an acute need for action. Children and young people are the skilled workers of tomorrow. “We have to provide them with high-quality, individualized educational offerings across all types of schools so that we can remain internationally competitive as an educational and business location in the long term,” emphasized vbw Managing Director Bertram Brossardt.

It is the first Pisa report card since the corona pandemic. In reading, mathematics and science, the 15-year-olds delivered the worst results ever measured in Pisa in Germany. Pisa stands for “Program for International Student Assessment” and is the largest international school performance comparison study led by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). Germany is one of a handful of countries where the decline in performance was particularly pronounced during the corona pandemic.

Mainz City’s Financial Future: Moving Away from Liquidity Loans and Focusing on Investment

DThe city of Mainz, which is financially well off thanks to the tax revenue bubbling up thanks to the success of Biontech, no longer wants to take out liquidity loans in the future. “We should fundamentally avoid that,” said Mayor Nino Haase of the German Press Agency in Mainz. Municipal consumption should not be financed through loans. “That got us into trouble.” In previous years, liquidity loans made up the majority of the city’s debt, said the independent politician. “There is then no lasting value, so the debt increases.”

The situation is different with investment loans, which the city of Mainz will also take out for larger projects in the future. “You don’t always have the liquidity in your pocket and you don’t always want to finance 100 percent with equity.” Despite all the planning, it must be clear that there will no longer be billions in trade tax revenue quickly.

Despite the good starting position, Mainz has to stretch to remain attractive – so that people who come here for a job also live in the city and pay taxes. To achieve this, living space and educational opportunities would have to be created. Mainz is also tackling the international school project intensively. He is optimistic that something about this can be presented next year. A report is dedicated to the question of where there is still potential for new living space, said Haase. “We still have potential.” He believes 10,000 to 12,000 new residential units are possible in the next ten to twelve years. “The big goal is the compatibility of family and work.”

Discovery of WWII Bomb in Hamburg’s Schanzenviertel Leads to Evacuation and Transit Disruptions

The S-Bahn is closed and Bartelsstrasse in Hamburg’s Schanzenviertel has been cleared. The reason for this is an aerial bomb from the Second World War.

An aircraft bomb from World War II was discovered during construction work in Hamburg’s Schanzenviertel on Monday. The police and fire department are on site, the police tweeted in the afternoon.

Bartelsstrasse was cleared first. Residents were asked to follow the instructions. The bomb is said to be a British model, according to the German Press Agency. The airspace above the bomb site was blocked and several S-Bahn trains stopped operating.

According to the S-Bahn, the operation of lines S21, S2 and S31 on the route via Dammtor, Sternschanze and Holstenstraße was discontinued because of the bomb find. The trains of the S31 would be used from Sternschanze and Dammtor as “evacuation trains” for everyone to use. A citizen hotline can be reached on 040 4286 51609.

Evacuation within a radius of 300 meters

According to a report by the Nina-Warnapp, it should be a 250-pound bomb. The radius for the planned evacuation is 300 meters around the site on Bartelstrasse. According to dpa information, around 4,200 people are said to be affected. The warning radius, on the other hand, is even 500 meters.

An emergency shelter was set up at the St. Pauli vocational school, Budapester Straße 58, from 6 p.m., the Warnapp continues.

Two duds in two weeks

The following applies in the warning radius: people who are there should go into solid buildings and stay away from windows and glass doors. There is a risk of splintering. According to a police spokesman, it was initially not foreseeable when the defusing of the 500-pound bomb could begin.

“Forest Fires Break Out in Brandenburg: Smoke Reduces Visibility on Freeway”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com May 30, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

In Kleinmachnow near Berlin, the forest burned on Whit Monday. The smoke reduced visibility on the nearby freeway.

Several smaller forest fires broke out in Brandenburg at Pentecost. A large burning pile of wood triggered a forest fire near Kleinmachnow in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district near Berlin. The burning area is between 100 and 200 square meters, said Brandenburg’s forest fire protection officer Raimund Engel on Monday of the German Press Agency. Because of the proximity to the 115 motorway, the fire brigade warned of possible visual impairment. According to the RBB, the fire was under control again around 11:30 a.m.

According to the forest fire protection officer, forest fires also broke out on Monday in Lindow in the Ostprignitz-Ruppin district and in Finsterwalde in the Elbe-Elster district. A fire in Jämlitz in the Spree-Neiße district on the border with Saxony in an area of around 200 square meters has already been extinguished.

Brandenburg: So far fewer forest fires than 2022

According to Engel, there have been 56 fires in the country since the wildfire season began in early March. “It’s still subdued,” he said. Last year there were 142 forest fires at the end of May. Brandenburg was very lucky with the relatively cool spring.

The German Weather Service predicts a high risk of forest fires for most locations in Brandenburg on Wednesday. “With every day that the drought lasts longer, the situation is definitely not getting better,” said Engel.

Forest fire risk slightly reduced

The risk of forest fires in Brandenburg had decreased somewhat on Whit Monday compared to Sunday. According to the Ministry of the Environment, the second highest danger level, which indicates a high risk, only applied in the districts of Teltow-Fläming, Dahme-Spreewald and Elbe-Elster. The rest of the country was at moderate risk. The cumulus clouds have led to higher humidity, said Engel. “The humidity makes a big difference.”

The Brandenburg Ministry of the Environment indicates the risk of a forest fire breaking out in five stages in order to sensitize the population. The German Weather Service provides the data. Air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, precipitation rate and radiation of the atmosphere are included in the calculation. According to the state forestry agency, Brandenburg is the state with the highest risk of forest fires nationwide with extensive pine forests, little rainfall and light sandy soil.
