Casino Billionaireโฃ Lim Kok Thay to Take Genting Malaysia Private inโ $1.6 Billion โDeal
Kuala โฃLumpur – Malaysian billionaire Lim Kok Thay’s conglomerateโ is moving to consolidate it’s casino and hospitality businesses, announcingโข a $1.6 billionโ (6.7 billion ringgit) dealโ to โขacquireโ the โremainingโ shares of Genting Malaysia it does not currently own. the move willโค result in Genting Malaysia being delisted from the Bursa Malaysia stock exchange.
According to โaโ regulatory filing on Monday, the company will purchase approximately 2.9โฃ billion shares,representing 50.6% of Genting Malaysia, atโ a price of 2.35 โringgit per share in cash.โข Shares of Genting Malaysia jumped โ8.9% following the declaration,while its parent company’s stock roseโ 3.9% inโ early trading.
The acquisitionโฃ will be funded through โฃa combination of loans and internal funds, wiht aโ completion timeline yet to beโ disclosed.
Gaining full ownership โof Genting Malaysia is expected to strengthen the group’s financial position and โprovide capital for future projects, including a potential $5.5 billion casino resort in Queens, New York, contingent โขon securing a new gaming license. Genting currently operates casinos in New York,โ Las โVegas, theโค Bahamas, Malaysia, and Singapore.
The deal follows Lim Kok Thay’s transition from Group CEO to Executive Chairman of Genting in Febuary,after nearly two decades leading the company. This shift occurred amidst declining โฃcontributions from its Singapore and U.S. casinos,with Genting’s 2024 net profit fallingโ 11% toโ 2 billion ringgit.
Founded in 1965 by Lim’s late father, Lim Goh Tong, โGenting began with aโฃ mountaintop casino resort in Genting Highlands. The โconglomerate has asโ expanded into diverse sectors including energy, power generation, real estate,โ life sciences, and biotechnology.
Lim Kok Thay, with a current net worthโ of โ$1.8 billion according to Forbes‘ โreal-time data,has overseen Genting’s global expansion.The group is currently investing S$6.8 billion ($5.1 billion) in upgrading Resorts World Sentosa in Singapore, โadding 700 hotel roomsโค and a new theme park.
