Thin Women canโ Develop PCOS, Fertility Expert Warns
JAKARTA, Indonesia – Women โคwith a low body weight can also experience Polycystic Ovary โฃSyndrome (PCOS), a common hormonal disorderโข affecting fertility, according to Dr. โฃDr. Gita Pratama, Sp.OG, Subsp. โFER., M.Rep.Sc,โข a specialist in obstetrics and โgynecology andโข reproductive endocrinology. The condition, frequentlyโค enough associated with obesity, can manifest with less severe symptoms in those who are thin, a presentation known as “lean PCOS.”
PCOS impacts reproductive health and โmetabolic โfunction, โand this revelation challenges the common perception that it solely affects women who are overweight orโฃ obese.Understandingโข that lean women are also susceptible isโฃ crucial for early diagnosis and intervention, possibly preventing โขlong-term health complicationsโค like diabetes. Approximately 50 percentโ ofโข women with PCOS areโ estimated โฃto develop diabetes โฃbefore the age of 40, highlighting the importance of proactive healthcare.
Dr.โฃ Gita explained that while women with lower body weights โcan maintain health through consistent exercise and a tailored diet, thoseโข with PCOS often experience easierโ weight gain โand increased appetite, potentially leading to snack cravings. This can then contribute to insulin resistance, a precursor to typeโ 2 โdiabetes.
“So if obesity occurs, โmany patients then suffer insulin resistance or a condition that we can โsayโ is pre-diabetes,” Dr.Gita said.
Insulin resistance occurs when the body’s โcells โขbecome lessโ responsive to insulin, makingโ it difficult to regulate blood sugar โlevels. This underscores the need for increased public awareness, particularly among teenagers, toโ prioritize a healthy lifestyle and proactive uterine health management from a young age, according to Dr. Gita. The specialist emphasized the importance of education to empower women to recognize potential symptoms and seek timely medical attention.
