“A Song Before You Feel”: Concert Tour Addresses End-of-Life and Social Connection in Salten, Norway
Bodø, Norway – A unique concert tour is bringing conversations about life, loss, and community to the forefront in the Salten region of Norway. Priest Arnt-Håkon Nordkil and musician Pål-Are Bakksjø are embarking on a series of performances titled ”A Song Before You Feel,” marking the launch of a new season for the “generation Gnist” (Generation Sparkle) initiative.
The tour, scheduled to visit municipalities including Hamarøy, Steigen, and Bodø throughout September, is described as a “dialog concert” offering a fresh viewpoint on navigating the end of life. Rather than shying away from difficult topics, Nordkil and Bakksjø aim to invite audiences into open discussion.
This initiative arrives at a crucial time for Salten, which, like much of Norway, is facing important demographic shifts. An aging population, increasing rates of individuals living alone, and challenges faced by young people are driving the need for stronger community bonds.
“It is in the community wiht others that we find meaning, belonging and joy of life,” explains Steinar Pleimar Johansen, academic leader at salten Cultural Cooperation. ”Participation in culture and outdoor life is crucial to creating a good and functioning old age - we need this in the future of Salten.”
Generation Gnist is a collaborative effort between local municipalities, nursing homes, Salten Cultural Cooperation, and the Salten outdoor Council. The program builds on the proven benefits of cultural and outdoor activities in promoting health, well-being, and social inclusion, notably among the elderly – and fostering connections between generations.
