Marquette, MI – Marquette Medical Urgent Care (MMUC) has become the first urgent care facility inโข the United States too offer medication abortion services, addressing a critical gap โคin reproductive healthcare access, especially following restrictions in neighboring states. The clinic’s expanded services are madeโ possible through a partnership with Reproductive Health Resources, allowing them to offset costs for patients seekingโ care.
MMUC owner and medical director, Dr.Shawn Brown, explained the financial accessibility model:โฃ “We โคhave patients โpay what they’re able to, on a sliding fee scale, out-of-pocket, and whatever the deficit is of those costs, we have that covered by Reproductiveโฃ Health Resources.” โAn initial $45 co-pay is required, with additional resourcesโฃ available โto โขcover remaining balances.
Funding also comes from Hydra, a downstate abortion resources network, the Fountain Street Church in Grand Rapids, and FemInEM, a nationwide emergency medicine women’s interest institution. The clinic also assists patients โขwith logistical needs, including gas cards for travelโฃ from out of state and, in specific cases, temporary hotel accommodations.
“Anybody โคcan come in,” stated MMUC staff โขmember Koskenoja, noting patients have traveled from as far as Wisconsin and seven counties within the upper Peninsula.
Beyond medication abortion, the partnership with Reproductive health โResources aims to expand access to birth control, potential cancer screenings, and the creation โคof a freeโ community clinic.
MMUC alsoโข operates a Sexual Assault Nurse Examination (SANE) program in collaboration with the Marquette Women’s Center, providing 24/7 supportโฃ for assault survivors aged 13 and olderโฃ within five days of an incident.
