Young Man Sentenced to 8 Months in Prison for Scooter Accident – Latest News from Châteaubriant
Par Editorial Châteaubriant

The young man from Pannecé who injured his passenger and then a gendarme while fleeing on a scooter in Vallons-de-l’Erdre (Loire-Atlantique) on January 5, 2024 was sentenced this Monday, January 15, 2024, in immediate appearance, to eight months in prison by the Nantes criminal court.
A young person “unfavorably known” to the gendarmes
The latter was, however, authorized to serve this sentence with an electronic bracelet; the public prosecutor had requested the same sentence, but with continued detention, for this 22-year-old young person “unfavorably known” to the gendarmes.
She also wanted his driving license revoked and banned from retaking the tests for six months.
The defendant “knew what he risked” that day by taking the handlebars of his two-wheeler, according to her: he had already been sentenced in 2020 for a previous “refusal to comply” and in May 2023 to four months suspended prison sentence for driving without a license.
In this case, it was a local resident who had in fact raised the alarm on January 5, 2024, around 11:15 a.m., for an “accident on the public highway” in a housing estate in the new commune: two gendarmerie reservists were then “arrived very quickly” on site and the witness had told them that young people were doing “a rodeo” on a 50 cc scooter, recalled the president of the Nantes criminal court.
He resold his scooter “to traveling people”
The passenger found “on the ground, his thigh bloody” had confirmed that the driver “had moments of madness” and that he was “doing wheelies” when he himself had “slipped” from his seat.
While his friend was still there and the gendarmes had asked him “not to leave”, he – who “smelled of alcohol” and had “shiny eyes” – had discreetly moved away… and left by scooter.

The gendarme then “tried to catch up with him and grab the saddle”, but ultimately tripped, which would one day result in him being totally incapacitated for work (ITT).
If the passenger ultimately did not want to give the identity of the driver, his father had mentioned “a certain” first name which was “very well known” in the “collective memory” of the Saint-Mars-la-Jaille gendarmerie brigade …
The pilot therefore finally presented himself to the gendarmerie on January 11, 2024… not without having in the meantime resold his machine “to travelers” for “€1,600” – even though he had bought “€3,000”.
He wanted to “escape the confiscation” which was going to be pronounced by the courts, according to the public prosecutor. “In any case, he was done: it was with his phone that the emergency services were called. »
“It’s a completely irresponsible attitude: he hurts his friend and runs away because what matters to him is reselling his scooter… Monsieur continues to have fun,” she lashed out.
The representative of the public prosecutor therefore wanted him to be ordered to pay a fine of €1,600 to the public treasury – the sum he had withdrawn from the resale of his two-wheeler – for having wanted to “bias” in this way.
“Disproportionate” requisitions
The defense lawyer deplored these “disproportionate” requisitions for this young person “who “can be unpleasant”, but who also “lost his father” in August 2023.
“We all understand the trauma that it can be,” she pleaded.
“My client was also concerned about the state of health of his friend, since he contacted him afterwards… He acted on impulse, but, once he had settled down, he is handed over to the police on his own. »
“He also lives in Pannecé… It’s a bit in the countryside,” the defendant’s lawyer reminded the judges so that his driving license would not be canceled.
In the same way, the fine of €1,600 which had been requested by the prosecution was going to “burden a little more” his financial situation, while he is already “completely overwhelmed by financial problems” to use the words of the president of the court.
“Stay alone and it’s not going to solve anything… So go see a social worker and don’t wait for someone to come and get you: with €90,000 in debt and 0 in resources, we’re going to come and seize your house,” the magistrate had thus warned him.
The defendant – who would like to become a “machine driver” in the future – will ultimately be required to work, will have to pay a fine of €1,000 to the public treasury and has been banned from driving any motor vehicle for ten months.
The young man will also have to pay €200 in damages to the gendarme he injured, but also €200 to his passenger.
