Israel-Gazaโข Conflict โขEscalates: New Offensive and Mounting Challenges
The conflict between Israel and โHamas is entering a newโข phase with an anticipated offensive targeting โคGaza City. Israeli Defense Forces โฃ(IDF) Chief Herzi โHalevi announced โขthe army had “liquidated dozens ofโข terrorists” in the preparatoryโข phase of the โขoperation, โincluding battalion commanders and other โmid-levelโ leaders.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health in Hamas-led Gazaโข reported thirteen deaths โฃin โthe past 24 hours, includingโ three children, bringing the total numberโค of deathsโข due to starvationโ or chronic malnutrition to 361โค since the start of the war, โaccording to Gaza authorities.
This report contradicts earlier statements by Israeli โฃPrime Minister benjamin Netanyahu, who claimed at the end of July thatโค thereโ was โคno starvationโ in Gaza. The IDF initially dismissedโข claims of โขstarvation as Hamas propaganda. However, โfollowing warnings from over a hundred aid organizations detailingโ increasing mass hunger, the IDF announcedโ daily humanitarian โฃ”tacticalโ breaks” in areas without active โขland operations and the creation โof designated humanitarian corridors for aid delivery. โFormer U.S. president Donald โTrump also acknowledged that โ”hunger is real” in the Gazaโ Strip.
Domestic Discontent rises
The delay inโ securing the release of hostages,โ previously โคconsideredโ a topโ priority, has sparked widespread outrage within Israel. In mid-August,hundreds of thousands of โคIsraelis tookโ toโ the streets โฃin protest, and as the offensive develops, demonstrations have become increasingly radical, with โขcars reportedly set ablaze in Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Despite ongoingโค street โฃprotestsโ and demands for a focus on hostage return,โค the โNetanyahu government appearsโ to prioritize “winning the war.” this has led toโ growingโข “apathy” among reservists. While sixty thousand reservists were called up, many are motivated by โpersonal orโข material reasons. On Tuesday, hundreds of veterans refusedโค service, citing “reserve conscience.”
In โan open letter, thes veterans stated, “We areโฃ not willing to take part in โขNetanyahu’s illegal war, we considerโ the denial โofโฃ service to our patriotic duty and demand the accountability ofโค our leaders.” The prolonged conflict is also straining IDF resources, with reports of shortages, including โa lack of D-9 armored bulldozers, crucial for urban warfare.
To addressโ the pressure on โreserves,โฃ exacerbatedโค by the continued exemption of ultra-orthodox youngโค peopel from military service, Prime Minister Netanyahu promised a โshort offensive.
Economicโข Strain
The length of the offensive is becoming a โคmeaningful economic โconcern. Israeliโค public media calculations estimate that delaying the war and launchingโฃ an offensive on Gaza โCity โขwill cost $7.4 billion (approximately 2,500 billion forints), necessitating further economicโค restrictions.
