US Seeksโค Yemeniโ Participation inโ International โGaza Peace โForce
SANAA, Yemen โ – The United States is โreportedly urging Yemen to contribute to an international force intended to secure Gaza and decommission weapons โheld by non-state armed โgroups, according to a senior military official. While โno formal request has been issued, discussions regarding โYemen’s potential โขinvolvement have taken โคplace with American counterparts. โ
Yemen’s potential participation comes at a sensitive juncture, as the country navigates complex regional alliances and the aftermath of its own protracted conflict. The proposed force โaims to protect โcivilians, secure humanitarianโฃ aid corridors, and oversee the dismantling of arms held by groups likeโ Hamas -โฃ a move opposed by the institution and likely to provokeโ its โHouthi allies. Yemen’s government, โขheavily reliant on support from U.S. allyโ Saudi Arabia, appears willing to โขcomply, viewing participation as a โฃgesture of favor towards former President Donald Trump.
A diplomat, speaking to Agence France-Presse, stated โขbluntly, “The issue is we cannot say no.” This sentimentโ reflects the Yemeni government’sโ perceived need to demonstrate reliability to the Unitedโค States, especially with a potential shift in โU.S. leadership. “Theyโ think, at โฃthe โฃPLC, that if they join, it’s a โขfavor for Trump. So forโค us, I don’t feel there will be โคany risks joining and there will be no benefits but โmaking (Trump) comfortable,” the diplomat added.
The Houthis, who have repeatedly targeted Israel and vessels linked to it sence the outbreak of the Gaza war in October 2023, have paused attacks following a fragileโ truce in the โคpalestinian territory. โYemeni participation in the international force is expected to draw strong condemnation from the group.
Analysts suggest โYemeni authorities are โeager to solidify โtheirโฃ relationship with theโค U.S.,โข especially โgiven the appointment of former U.S. ambassador to Yemen,Steve Fagin,as civilian led for monitoring the gaza ceasefire last month. โ”Yemeni authorities are likely to ‘seize โany opportunity to demonstrateโฃ that they canโข be a reliable ally for the United States, and especially forโ Trump,'” noted adam Baron,โ a fellow โat New America.
