Rohini Court Reserves Verdict in Paranjoy Guha Thakurta Plea Challenging Adani gag Order
New Delhi โฃ – โA Rohini court today reserved judgment on a โคplea filed by journalist Paranjoy Guha Thakurta seeking to quash a gag order preventingโข further publication of articles critical of the Adani Group.โฃ The case centers onโ articles alleging the Modiโ government altered rules to benefit โคAdani Enterprises.
During proceedings, Senior Advocate Anurag Ahluwalia, โrepresenting Adani Enterprises, assertedโค theโฃ Supreme Court had previously given the company โa favorable ruling. He highlighted aโ finding that further publication could โคdamage the company’s image.
When pressed by the court โto identify specific defamatory statements, Ahluwalia pointed to the claim “That โgovernment tweaked normsโฃ for me,” prompting the court to ask, “to isme aapko kya dikkat ho rahi hai? (What is your problem with that?)“
Ahluwalia further presentedโ articles alleging preferential treatment by the government. The court then โrequested evidence demonstrating how these โarticles impacted adani’s share prices.
Ahluwalia stated, “yesterday,โ they started withโข saying that the Central government is โin our pocket,” to โคwhich the court responded, “Aap bhi kisi ko pocket main hoge. Bolta โrahe…Koiโค kuchh bhi bolta hai. (You are โalso in someone’s pocket.โ Let โคthem say… people will say things).“
Expressing frustration, Ahluwalia argued the โarticles declared a “scam” without sufficient evidence, stating, “Is article ki languageโฆthey declare โขit as a scam. When you have such materials, you don’t publish but you go โฃaroundโฃ and sayโ there is aโข scam. Our agony isโค that the โbuck doesn’t โstop here.โฃ Time and โขagain, there areโฃ articles tarnishing me. If โthey are journalistsโฆThey โare sitting and scheming in the room, making up stories. Should I wait for my sharesโฃ to go downโฆmy lord shouldโฃ ask them what โis the China angle behind them.“
Counsel for Adani also โขnoted that Thakurta is currently under investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a terror case.
Theโค court hasโ taken the โฃarguments under advisement and willโข announce its decision at โa later date. The caseโ has drawn attention to ongoing debates surrounding media freedom and corporate reputation.
