Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has been at the center of a controversy stemming from a police investigation into an alleged sexual assault involving the brother of former Barça player Ansu Fati, with initial reports incorrectly linking the incident to Yamal’s home.

The investigation, conducted by the Mossos d’Esquadra, concerns an alleged assault on a Dutch woman. News reports initially stated the incident occurred at a residence belonging to Yamal, prompting a swift and forceful response from the player and his legal team.

“What the hell is this?” Yamal reportedly exclaimed upon learning of the reports, according to Spanish media. His family also expressed frustration, stating, “It seems like all the parties in Barcelona are Lamine’s. We don’t understand it. He’s a kid.”

Barcelona officials and Yamal’s lawyers quickly moved to distance the player from the situation, clarifying that he was not present at the location and was not even in Barcelona at the time of the alleged incident. They emphasized that the property in question was not his and that he had no involvement.

Yamal’s legal team issued 31 “burofaxes” – formal legal notifications – to various media outlets that had reported the inaccurate information, demanding retraction and correction of the claims that linked him to the alleged assault. Most media outlets subsequently rectified their reporting.

The incident occurred shortly after Barcelona’s Copa del Rey semifinal match against Atlético Madrid. Yamal had been focused on his performance and the upcoming La Liga title race, with Barcelona facing Girona on Monday, February 16, 2026, in a crucial match following Real Madrid’s recent victory against Real Sociedad. Girona coach Michel spoke to the press ahead of the game, discussing the pressure on Barcelona to secure a win to remain at the top of the league.

Despite his youth, Yamal, 18, has demonstrated a remarkable composure, according to those close to him. Deco, Barcelona’s director of sport, described him as “very intelligent” and possessing “great maturity for a boy of 18.” Spain’s national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, has echoed this sentiment. Reports suggest Yamal possesses an ability to remain unaffected by the pressures of fame and scrutiny, a trait described as a “resin on the skin” by someone close to the Barcelona dressing room.

Yamal himself acknowledged the unusual nature of his life in a recent interview, stating, “A kid of 18 leaves school and goes home. I leave training and have four paparazzi at my house asking about my life. I turn on the TV and I’m on TV. I walk down the street and see a kid with my shirt. I wish to proceed have a drink and I can’t.” He added, “I try to locate simple things, like playing PlayStation, going to eat with my mother and being with my brother. But, honestly, I will never be a normal 18-year-old because people don’t see me as normal, nor could I act that way.”
