Bay Area Sees Rise in Valley โฃFever Cases, Affecting Both People adn Pets
Cases of Valley โฃfever, a respiratory infection caused by a fungus found in soil, are increasingโฃ across the Bay Area, prompting health officialsโค to โขurge awareness and early detection.โ Recent โฃdata from theโข California Department of Publicโ Health reveals a significant number of infections reportedโข in several counties, with Santa Clara County leading the region.
Valley fever, also known as coccidioidomycosis, isn’tโฃ new to California, but experts are observing a concerning upward trend. The infection can affect both humans and dogs, causing symptoms that often mimic other common illnesses, making diagnosis challenging. While most infections are mild and resolve on their own, severe cases can require antifungal treatment and prolonged medical care.
Here’s a breakdown of reported cases in select Bay Area counties:
* โ Alameda: 39 cases
* Contra โCosta: 15 cases
* San Mateo: 43โฃ cases, with 29 in 2023 and 21 in 2022
* Santa Clara: 71 cases in 2023 and โฃ69 in 2022, with 56 reported previously
* โ Solano: 19 cases in 2023, 24 โin 2022, and 20 previously
* Sonoma: 10 cases in 2023, 11 in 2022, and 7โ previously
Health experts advise anyone suspecting Valley fever and experiencing symptomsโฃ for more than a weekโ to contactโฃ their healthcare provider. Symptoms are similar to those of other common illnesses, so a blood test or chest x-ray might potentially be necessary for diagnosis, according to California health officials.
“Ifโฃ you are diagnosed with Valley fever, itโค is indeedโข very crucialโข toโค follow the instructions givenโค by your healthcare provider aboutโข treatment, follow-up testing, and appointments,” officials stated. Mild infectionsโข may not require treatment, but all symptomatic individuals should seek medical evaluation.
The fungus that causes Valley fever lives in the soil and is disturbed when it’s dug up during construction, farming, or even natural events like windstorms. People and animals can become infected by breathing in the fungal spores. Dogs are notably susceptible โtoโฃ Valley fever and can exhibit symptoms like coughing, fever,โข and weight loss.
