Liga BetPlay Set for Format Changes Ahead of 2026 Worldโ Cup
Colombian professional football โis preparing for significant changes โto โขthe โฃLiga BetPlayโฃ format,โข beginningโค inโ 2026, largely driven by the needโค toโ conclude the league season prior to the 2026 Worldโ Cup. Dimayor president Carlos Mario zuluaga outlinedโ theโข planned adjustments in a recent interview with Caracol Radio.
A key change under consideration is the elimination of the current “home run” โค(all vs.all within groups) stage.โฃ Zuluaga indicated a shift โtowards a direct elimination โฃtournamentโค system, ofen referred to as a “kills” or knockout format, is being proposed. The 2026 leagueโข seasonโ is currentlyโฃ scheduled to begin in the second week of January and conclude in the first weekโฃ of โฃJune, presenting โขchallenges for club preseason preparations. The newโข format aims to mitigate these โฃissues and potentially avoid scheduling โคclashes with conventional โฃrivalry matches (“clรกsicos”).
beyond the immediate format โคadjustments โfor 2026,Dimayor is also planning substantial changes to the relegation and promotionโข system, slated to โtake effect in โ2027. The plan involves increasing the number of teams relegated from the ligaโ BetPlay to the Primera B toโข three, while only allowing one team toโค be promoted. However, the relegation โขsystem basedโฃ on average points will remain in place.
Further down the line, the Primera โขB tournamentโค will transition to a single championship per year. Lookingโฃ ahead, there isโ discussion about potentially expanding bothโค relegation and โค promotion toโค threeโฃ teams annually.
Theseโข adjustmentsโฃ are intended to ultimately reduceโข the number โof teamsโ in the โคLiga BetPlay to 18 byโ 2028. Zuluaga believes these changes will enhance the league’s competitiveness and global perception, positioning โColombianโ football asโ a “modern league” focused on entertainment and a โhigh-quality product. The changes will be implemented over โa three-year period, beginning in 2026, to allow clubs to adapt and improve their โคcompetitiveโ levels.
