Manuel Neuer Set to Make Comeback for FC Bayern Munich after Ten-Month Injury

Manuel Neuer is making his comeback at FC Bayern Munich after more than ten months of injury. Coach Thomas Tuchel announced that the 37-year-old captain would be back in goal for Saturday’s Bundesliga home game against SV Darmstadt 98, “if nothing happens in training.” Neuer last played for Munich on November 12, 2022 in a 2-0 win at FC Schalke 04.

Manuel Neuer: “I don’t think Neuer could play outside”

Tuchel is looking forward to the goalkeeper’s return. “I feel his anticipation and feel his whole class. He has a lot of experience, he’s enjoying it right now,” Tuchel continued and added: “There will definitely be a certain amount of nervousness, a tingling feeling. I’m sure he will gets into the rhythm very quickly.”

The 2014 world champion played his last game ever in Germany’s early World Cup exit in Qatar on December 1, 2022 against Costa Rica. After the tournament, he broke his tibia and fibula on his right lower leg during a ski tour. Since then he has been working on his comeback.

Delay due to calf problems

Tuchel had already refrained from making Neuer’s comeback a week ago against FSV Mainz and then in the Champions League group game at Galatasaray Istanbul. “Now we all have to slow down,” the coach said.

Neuer’s return plan did not work out as the goalkeeper had hoped. In the meantime, the goal was to start this season, but that didn’t happen. At the end of August, Neuer completed a session with his goalkeeper colleagues for the first time. Afterwards he had to slow down again at times due to calf problems.

Future in the national team is uncertain

This season he was replaced in goal by Sven Ulreich, who is now the substitute keeper again. Yann Sommer, who was signed as a representative last winter, left Munich for Inter Milan in the summer.

The new national coach Julian Nagelsmann left it open when he took office as to whether former DFB captain Neuer would return to the national team after his long injury break. He wanted to give the FC Bayern goalkeeper the time he needed to get healthy and regain 100 percent performance. “If the situation arises, we will evaluate it,” said Nagelsmann. The next international matches are scheduled for mid-November.

VfL Bochum: A Crisis Club in the Bundesliga’s Shooting Gallery

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 24, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

19 goals conceded make VfL Bochum a crisis club and the league’s shooting gallery. Now of all times we’re going to Leipzig – things have never looked good there.

As expectations rise, the height of the fall also changes. In that regard, VfL Bochum has just hit hard. Having competed at the start of the season to reach the next level in terms of sport, the club currently finds itself in a relegation zone. Six games, only three points, but a whopping 19 goals conceded – that was the sobering result at the beginning of October. The league’s shooting gallery is currently in Bochum.

In late summer, those responsible were still full of anticipation and self-confidence. “Come to stay” – this was the motto under which the team wanted to tackle the season boldly, both sportily and economically. “We have overcome the biggest hurdle by reaching the third year of the Bundesliga. VfL now has a historic opportunity,” Ilja Kaenzig, management spokesman, announced a controlled offensive in an interview with t-online.

Bochum put more money into the professional squad, invested in transfer fees again after a long time and gave Thomas Letsch a completely revamped team. The coach’s task was formulated as clear as it was optimistic: to further develop the football philosophy and reach the next level through play. “The toolbox is basically enlarged. I can’t always just use the simplest means in the Bundesliga. If you’re still just playing diamonds in the fifth Bundesliga year, you don’t have to be surprised if you don’t find any solutions,” said Ilja Kaenzig, formulating the claim of the club.

Regression instead of further development – what is going on at VfL?

But instead of further development, VfL experienced a significant regression just a few weeks later. In the 0:7 debacle in Munich, but especially in the 1:3 home defeat against Gladbach – for Letsch simply “a catastrophe” – the team delivered a bad result and a bad game. Even among those responsible there is a certain perplexity about what is currently happening in Bochum. After all, there had already been respectable games against BVB and Frankfurt. “The discrepancy in performance in such a short time is astonishing,” admits sports director Patrick Fabian.

In any case, it shouldn’t be due to the attitude of the professionals or their willingness. “The intensity in training was there, which is why the performance against Gladbach was all the more surprising,” says Fabian. The coach underlines this impression: “There was no lack of intensity and willingness in the training weeks or in the game. We run a lot and bring a lot of intensity to the pitch.”

But what’s the point then? Isn’t switching to a three-man defense and moving away from the previously successful 4-3-3 order the right approach? A topic that annoys Letsch and at which he shakes his head vehemently: “It has nothing to do with the system at all,” he made it clear after the 5-0 opening defeat in Stuttgart.

Letsch finds clear words

Tactically, however, the question arises as to whether the opponent’s generally high pressing and early starts are good for the team. Gladbach had 27 shots on goal on a foreign pitch. Is VfL taking too much risk? For the coach it’s a question of implementation: “Against Gladbach we didn’t win the decisive duels. Then the second player was missing to provide support. We didn’t keep the field compact and had to run after it. If we won the balls, we got them were given away too quickly and were not sorted.”

With a view to the game at RB Leipzig this Saturday, Thomas Letsch announced that he would “adapt” the style of play and make some personnel changes. The South German clearly formulated the requirements profile in his own way: “We have to find the players who don’t give a shit.” Courage, conviction and a certain amount of defiance are required – and a look at the statistics shows why. In five guest appearances in Leipzig so far, Bochum have suffered five defeats, scoring exactly one goal but conceding 16 goals. On average, just as many as currently in the Bundesliga.

Borussia Dortmund’s Comeback Victory Against SC Freiburg

SC Freiburg – Borussia Dortmund 2:4 (2:1)

Borussia Dortmund prevented another setback in the Bundesliga: BVB won 4-2 (1-2) at SC Freiburg and turned a deficit at half-time to their second win of the season.

Mats Hummels gave BVB the lead in the 11th minute. Then Lucas Höler (45th+2) and Nicolas Höfler (45th+6) turned the game in Freiburg’s favor. Donyell Malen equalized for Dortmund in the 60th minute and with Hummels’ second goal in the 88th minute, BVB took the lead again. In stoppage time Marco Reus (90+2) also scored to make it 4:2 (2:1).

RB Leipzig – FC Augsburg 3:0 (3:0)

RB Leipzig wins 3-0 (3-0) against FC Augsburg and thus reduces the gap to league leaders Bayer Leverkusen and FC Bayern Munich to one point.

First, Xavi Simons headed in the lead in the 7th minute in front of 44,746 spectators, four minutes later Loïs Openda made it 2-0. David Raum (27th) made the half-time and final score with his first RB goal. While RB is in third place in the Bundesliga table, Augsburg remains winless after four matchdays.

VfL Wolfsburg – Union Berlin 2:1 (2:1)

Wolfsburg wins 2:1 (2:1) against 1. FC Union Berlin. Four days before the first Champions League game in the club’s history, Union suffered its second defeat of the season.

In front of 28,917 spectators in Wolfsburg, Union started strong, but then literally invited VfL to take the lead in the 12th minute. Wolfsburg’s Jonas Wind made it 1-0 after a nice one-two with Lovro Majer. Only two minutes passed between Robin Gosens’ 1-1 (28th) and Joakim Maehle’s 2-1 (30th).

FSV Mainz 05 – VfB Stuttgart 1:3 (0:0)

FSV Mainz 05’s low is getting worse: Mainz loses 3-1 against VfB Stuttgart. Serhou Guirassy scored all three goals for VfB in front of 30,500 spectators (56th minute/84th/90th+7). Leandro Barreiro’s equalizer (70th) wasn’t enough for Mainz.

Mainz initially got into the game better, Marco Richter had their first chance in the 9th minute. After that, VfB took more and more control, but the first goal only came in the second half. The equalizing goal gave Mainz hope for a while, but they ultimately suffered their third defeat of the season.

1. FC Cologne – 1899 Hoffenheim 1:3 (0:2)

TSG Hoffenheim won 3-1 (2-0) at 1. FC Köln. Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramarić scored after just 50 seconds. Florian Grillitsch (28th) took advantage of a mistake by Cologne goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe and scored with a shot from the halfway line – according to Sky broadcaster from 55.6 meters. Maximilian Beier (52nd) stepped up in the second half.

Cologne scored another goal in the 61st minute through Davie Selke. After the defeat, the team now only has one point. Rasmus Carstensen then saw a yellow-red card after a foul in stoppage time (90.+1).

VfL Bochum – Eintracht Frankfurt 1:1 (0:0)

VfL Bochum and Eintracht Frankfurt drew 1-1 (0-0). In front of 26,000 spectators, the guests from Frankfurt seemed close to their second win of the season after Eric Dina Ebimbe’s opening goal (55th). However, the Bochum team managed to get their deserved equalizer through Kevin Stöger with a penalty kick (74′).

Both teams played a draw three times in a row. Eintracht under coach Dino Toppmöller is still unbeaten. At VfL, however, the wait for their first win of the season continues.

In front of a record crowd, the women of FC Bayern welcomed Eintracht Frankfurt to the top game. The fans also set a record against 1. FC Köln in Bremen’s Weserstadion. In terms of sport, however, only Werder had something to celebrate.

The women’s Bundesliga benefited from the men’s international break. However, the FC Bayern Munich footballers only achieved a disappointing result at their Bundesliga premiere in the Allianz Arena in front of a record crowd. Coach Alexander Straus’ team had to be content with a 0-0 draw in front of 19,000 spectators in the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt.

However, the highest number of visitors in a league game for the Munich team did not inspire the home team. The German champions found it difficult to create clear scoring opportunities against smart defending from Frankfurt.

In addition to the high number of spectators, there were other special features: On the occasion of “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in October, a pink ribbon was integrated into the logo of the Munich women’s jersey sponsor as an international symbol in the fight against breast cancer. The Allianz Arena should also light up in pink after the final whistle. The aim of the actions was to send a “clear signal for breast cancer prevention,” FC Bayern explained before the game.

21,500 spectators celebrate Werder Bremen

The Werder Bremen footballers also set a club attendance record and surpassed the Munich mark. There were 21,508 spectators in the Weser Stadium on Saturday for the 3-0 (1-0) win over 1. FC Cologne. It was the second appearance in the big arena for coach Thomas Horsch’s team. Last November, Bremen lost 2-1 against SC Freiburg in front of 20,417 fans.

Werder initially benefited from an own goal from Cologne’s Celina Degen in their second win of the season. In the 32nd minute, the Austrian misdirected the ball into her own goal. Lina Hausicke (83rd) made it 2-0 with a powerful shot from close range. 17-year-old Melina Kunkel then made the final score in added time (90+3). In the table, Bremen have now moved past Cologne’s equal points with six points and are currently in fourth place.

FC Augsburg vs SC Freiburg: Facts and Previews for the 2023/24 Bundesliga Matchday 6

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 27, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

On the 6th matchday of the 2023/24 Bundesliga season, FC Augsburg travels to SC Freiburg. It’s the 23rd meeting in the upper house – enough material for our facts about the game.

On Sunday, October 1, 2023, the Fuggerstädter will go to Breisgau, where SC Freiburg is waiting. With seven points, the Dreisamstädters have two points more than the visitors from Bavaria – FCA could overtake the home team with an away win. However, the Lech footballers haven’t won abroad for almost a year. What else you should know:

FC Augsburg: Captain Demirovic has already been involved in six goals

The captain leads the way – at least when it comes to goal contributions. FCA frontman Ermedin Demirovic was directly involved in six of his team’s nine goals in five games this season. The Bosnian has three goals of his own and just as many assists.

Old friends meet at Freiburg against Augsburg

There was an exchange of strikers between the two clubs in the summer of 2022. The aforementioned Demirovic moved from Dreisam to Lech, while Michael Gregoritsch went the other way. The Austrian scored 29 goals in 119 Bundesliga games for FCA. Demirovic played 61 times for Freiburg in the upper house and was able to put the ball in the opponent’s box seven times. Striking: His successor in the SC uniform likes to score against his former club. Last season, “Gregel” scored one goal against the Fuggerstadt team in both the first and second half of the season.

Vincenzo Grifo and the FCA: Why Augsburg is shaking

If there is such a thing as a single player as a fearsome opponent for a team, then for FC Augsburg it is Vincenzo Grifo from Freiburg. The Italian has never lost to the team from the City of Peace in the Bundesliga. His record: nine wins, three draws and four own goals.

Will Streich succeed in the next one against Augsburg?

The name of the Breisgau coach may say it all after the game. Because if the local SC wins, it would be the sixth success in a row in the duel with the Bavarian Swabians – the sixth defeat.

FC Augsburg: The minimalists of the Bundesliga

The red-green-whites are frugal when they win. The last eleven in the league each achieved a difference of just one goal. Will there be a clearer success again? This was last the case in April 2022 in a 2-0 win in Bochum.

Three teams still have a chance at the championship play-off but only two teams make it.

The ticker from the game Austria Vienna vs Rapid Vienna

FK Austria Wien – SK Rapid Wien Sunday 5 p.m.;

FK Austria Vienna – SK Rapid Vienna Sunday, March 19, 2023, 5 p.m., Generali Arena, referee: Julian Weinberger

FK Austria Wien has been unbeaten in eight games against SK Rapid Wien in the Bundesliga (W1 D7) – like most recently from 2011 to 2013 (even 10 games back then). In the first leg, Vienna Austria won 2-1, it was the first victory in the Vienna derby for one of the two teams after seven draws in a row.

On December 16, 2018, FK Austria Wien won the home game against SK Rapid Wien 6-1. This was the only home win in the last 19 Bundesliga encounters between the two clubs.

SK Rapid Wien is unbeaten in four away games against FK Austria Wien in the Bundesliga (W1 D3) and lost only one of the last 11 BL derbies at Wiener Austria (W6 D4).

FK Austria Wien scored six goals after winning the ball from high (40 meters from the opponent’s goal) – best value. Conversely, Wiener Austria has already conceded six goals after deep ball losses – only SCR Altach (9) more. SK Rapid Wien have yet to concede a goal in the Bundesliga this season after losing the ball deep.

SK Rapid Wien won the last two duels under Zoran Barisic against FK Austria Wien in the Bundesliga – making him the last Rapid coach to win two derbies in a row. In addition, Barisic is the only Rapid coach in this millennium to have won three Viennese derbies in a row (2013/14).

The ticker from the game Ried vs Wolfsberg

SV Ried – Wolfsberger AC Sunday 5 p.m.;

SV Ried – RZ WAC Sunday, March 19, 2023, 5 p.m., josko ARENA, referee: Christian-Petru Ciochirca

SV Ried won the first leg against RZ WAC 2:1. Before that, WAC went nine games in a row unbeaten against Ried in the Bundesliga – that is a BL record for the Carinthians against a team.

RZ WAC has been unbeaten in four away games against SV Ried in the Bundesliga (W2 D2) and is therefore as often in these four games as in the first eight away games combined.

SV Ried scored their first win since October 15, 2022 (1-0 against SK Rapid Wien) with a 2-1 win over SCR Altach. In between there were eight duels without a win in the Bundesliga. Thanks to the win, the Innviertler are not at the bottom of the table for the first time since the 16th round.

RZ WAC scored 5.9 more goals than expected this season in the Bundesliga (35 goals at xG = 29.1) – the best value in the league. SV Ried scored 9.2 goals less (15 goals at xG = 25.2) – the weakest value of all 12 teams.

Ried’s Stefan Nutz provided his third assist this season in the Bundesliga in the 2-1 win against Altach. Nutz has been directly involved in 30 goals since SV Ried was promoted to the BL in 2020 – the highest number in the ranks of the Innviertler. He delivered one of his three assists this season in the first leg against RZ Pellets WAC.

TSV Hartberg – LASK Linz Sunday 5 p.m.;

TSV Hartberg vs LASK Linz Sunday, March 19, 2023, 5 p.m., Profertil Arena Hartberg, referee: Walter Altmann

TSV Hartberg has been unbeaten in the Bundesliga against LASK for seven games (3W 4U) – for the first time and only had a longer series (9 games) in the Bundesliga against FC Admira.

TSV Hartberg has 17 points after the first 21 games and thus for the first time so few at the same time in a Bundesliga season, but most recently won the home game against RZ WAC 2-1. The East Styrians last managed two BL home wins in a row in spring 2021 – at that time under coach Markus Schopp.

LASK only lost one of their first 10 away games. Since the founding of the Bundesliga, the people of Linz have only been able to do this in the 2019/20 season, when they even won the first 11 BL away games of the season.

Hartberg’s Dominik Frieser could be his 100th game in the Bundesliga against LASK The 29-year-old has played 61 of his 99 BL games for LASK (16 for Hartberg and 22 for WAC). With the Linzer Athletiker he was runner-up in 2018/19 and won the Europa League Group D in 2019/20 with 13 points ahead of Sporting Lisbon (12), PSV Eindhoven (8) and Rosenborg BK (1).

LASK coach Dietmar Kühbauer will play his 300th game in the Bundesliga as head coach against TSV Hartberg – as the eighth coach since the Bundesliga was founded. Legendary coach Otto Baric played the most games (466).

The ticker from the game WSG Tirol vs. Sturm Graz

WSG Tirol – SK Sturm Graz Sunday 5 p.m.;

WSG Tirol – SK Sturm Graz Sunday, March 19, 2023, 5:00 p.m., Tivoli Stadium in Tyrol, referee: Manuel Schüttengruber

SK Sturm Graz lost none of the nine games in the Bundesliga against WSG Tirol (W7 D2). Sturm only played so many BL games without a single defeat against SC Austria Lustenau (W13 1U).

SK Sturm Graz scored in each of the nine games against WSG Tirol in the Bundesliga and scored 24 goals. Only against SC Austria Lustenau did Graz also score in each of the first nine duels and scored as many goals (even 29).

The WSG Tirol lost three of the last four games, in the first six games of the second half of this Bundesliga season the Tyroleans remained undefeated (5S 1U). Furthermore, the Tyroleans have not won in four BL games (1D 3N) – their longest negative series this BL season.

SK Sturm Graz scored 45 points from their first 21 BL games – that’s how many there were at the time of comparison in a Bundesliga season in 1998/99 (at that time even 47). Sturm have only suffered two defeats – only in 1997/98 (1) were they fewer after the first 21 games.

SK Sturm Graz had 54 moves in the Bundesliga this season, which included at least 10 passes – only WSG Tirol and RZ WAC (53 each) fewer. However, the Styrians had 445 pressing sequences (sequences that end within a maximum of 40 meters of the opponent’s goal and contain a maximum of 3 passes), which is more than any other team this BL season.
