Franklin County Flood Relief Center to Close as Recovery Efforts Progress
Lexington, Ky.- Approximately four months after the Kentucky River reached historic heights and inundated Frankfort, the Franklin County flood relief donation center is set to close its doors this week. Organizers are focused on distributing remaining supplies to those still in need following the devastating floods.
“Our community has received the essential items needed for initial recovery, but our work isn’t finished,” stated Franklin County Judge-Executive Michael Mueller. “We still have a significant amount of disaster relief resources to distribute.”
The donation center was established in the wake of April’s flooding to provide a central location for residents to donate household goods to affected families. The warehouse space was generously provided temporarily to the county to facilitate the organization of donations.
“Losing everything leaves individuals with nothing to rebuild their lives,” explained Mueller.”Disaster recovery unfolds in stages – initial shock, followed by rebuilding, and a return to normalcy. This center aimed to support that final stage.”
The center has distributed a wide range of items, including crockpots, lamps, and bedframes, to flood victims over the past four months, aiding in their recovery process.
With fewer individuals now seeking assistance, the center aims to clear the warehouse by Wednesday at 4 p.m., ensuring all donations reach the homes of those impacted by the floods.
“This experience has demonstrated the strength of our community and our ability to work together during challenging times,” Mueller affirmed. “We are prepared to respond to future needs and provide support as required. We remain dedicated to serving our constituents.”
Individuals wishing to continue supporting flood victims in Franklin County are encouraged to donate to the Franklin County Community Fund, which supports local causes and organizations.
