The impact of Allegiant Stadium is being compared to that of The Mirage, which opened in 1989 and is widely credited with initiating the era of the Las Vegas mega-resort. “It’s the difference between hosting a 20,000-person boxing match and a 70,000-person football game,” according to industry analyst Roger Hill.
This expansion is set to accelerate. By 2028, a new 30,000-seat baseball stadium will be completed on the site of the former Tropicana hotel. The combination of baseball and football seasons is projected to create a near-constant stream of professional sporting events, with Hill anticipating “a pro sports game every other day.”
The shift extends beyond the Strip and into Downtown Las Vegas. Circa Resort & Casino’s Stadium Swim offers a unique viewing experience, with six heated pools arranged like an amphitheater, allowing fans to watch games – such as those of the Vegas Golden Knights – while enjoying poolside service. Below Stadium Swim lies what is billed as “the world’s biggest sports book,” a three-story space designed to accommodate a large number of bettors.
Sports books, once considered ancillary features of casinos, have become central to Las Vegas’s evolving identity. Lamarr Mitchell, director of trading at BetMGM, notes that sports betting has moved beyond being merely an amenity to becoming a significant driver of revenue. “Sports betting used to be an amenity; now it moves the needle,” he says.
Hill emphasizes that sports are not intended to replace Las Vegas’s traditional attractions but rather to amplify them. The day after a Formula 1 race, fans were already transitioning to other entertainment options. One group, having skipped the race itself, reported having dinner at Mother Wolf, partying at Liv, and finishing the night with breakfast at Eggslut, describing the experience as “fucking great.”
