Finance minister Riikka Purra (ps) and the Minister of the Interior Mari Rantanen (ps) will hold a press conference at 11:45 a.m. today, Thursday. The media was told about the event only on Thursday at nine o’clock.
Iltalehti shows the event live and follows its twists and turns in live text format.
According to the Ministry of the Interior’s communications, the topic of the press conference will not be made public before the event begins.
A possible topic for Purra and Rantanen’s press conference is savings for the police.
The government has promised to increase the number of police officers to 8,000 by the end of the election period.
However, the protection police is having to reduce its personnel. The Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of the Interior have proposed a reduction of 78 personal work years to the protection police.
Supo’s manager Juha Martelius told Helsingin Sanomat that the savings have a big impact on supo’s ability to acquire information and analyze the collected information.
Suomen Kuvalehti reported on Wednesday that savings are already being made to the police: temporary employment contracts are to be cut and police work-related travel is to be limited.
Chairman of the Union of Finnish Police Organizations (SPJL). Jonne Rinne told SK that, according to the union’s information, police departments have begun to save on purchases, equipment repair costs, temporary employment relationships, and evening, night, overtime, and weekend work.
The Minister of the Interior, Mari Rantanen, will take a stand on the savings for the police at a press conference. JANI BIRCH FABRIC

Former mayor of Helsinki and current chairman of the Olympic Committee, Jan Vapaavuori, commented on the messaging service X about his intentions to run for mayor of Helsinki again.
– I left 2021 without applying for a further term as mayor of Helsinki. There were reasons for this, and they have not gone away, Vapaavuori writes in his publication.
The current mayor of the city, Juhana Vartiainen, announced earlier that he will not apply for another term.
Vartiainen has been the mayor of Helsinki since 2021. The new mayor will be elected in the spring 2025 municipal elections. Vartiainen wrote in his blog that his way of working has not always suited the duties of the mayor in the best possible way.
If the message published by Vapaavuori is not visible, you can read it from this link.
According to Vapaavuori, he has been encouraged to run for office.
– Many people have bet that I would still run for office. Helsinki has many challenges. I’ll think about it and come back on my own schedule. Before that, I will not comment on the matter, Vapaavuori writes.
Finland’s poor success at the Paris Olympics started speculation about Vapaavuori continuing as chairman of the Olympic Committee.
Vapaavuori told the press conference of the Finnish Olympic team earlier that he probably intends to apply for another season as chairman of the Olympic Committee.
– I haven’t decided it definitively yet, but it’s not a habit to give up, Vapaavuori said at the time.

This was the biggest surprise of my life – 2024-08-02 07:02:37
Frederik experienced the biggest surprise of his life when he returned home from his travels. Since then, he has remained single.

Frederik experienced a severe shock five years ago. PASI LEISMA
Singer Ilkka Sysimetsä aka Frederik, 79, cheerfully answers the phone. The summer has included everything from gigging to camping and daytime coffee.
The artist badly hurt his knee and shoulder when he fell earlier this year. Now the problems are small aches, except for the life left behind.
– Healthy as a goat, he describes his condition.
In the beginning, the pain was such that the singer describes being on tramadol for several months. Lifting weights and tennis are now possible.
– Not Linkka or anything, but longer strain causes pain.
During the call, Frederik thinks that it might be time to invite him to a friend’s summer house. He usually calls before he arrives and asks what he can bring with him.
Daytime coffee club only
Summer life also includes romance. The singer admits that she has had enough of the so-called daytime coffee company. Frederik meets some “old friends” every couple of weeks. Together we enjoy cake and a bun, watch a movie and stay overnight for a day or two.
– Let’s hug and kiss, he quotes the vocabulary of the old folk.
Frederik is not interested in any kind of permanent relationship. Throughout his life, he has had longer relationships. A few years ago, a relationship came to an abrupt end.
– I came home from traveling and my house was empty, the singer reveals.
The girlfriend had decided to disappear completely. The singer admits that he had been away and traveling a lot, and couldn’t spend all the time taking care of the relationship. My partner had complained of loneliness. Still, Frederik believed that the relationship was stable.
When in a relationship, the singer’s style included bringing flowers and gifts. Frederik has also bought diamond rings.
Frederik does not know the reason for the end of the long relationship. Pete Anikari
The end of the relationship was a hard blow.
– He left like a thief. This can happen.
According to his own words, Frederik hasn’t been left before.
– This thing came out of the blue for me.
However, he understands the legalities of the world of relationships.
– If someone doesn’t want to be with me, what can I do about it.
Women visit Frederik this summer as well, but he does not intend to take anyone into his home permanently.

Leaving the mine agreement is in the hands of the ruling coalition – 2024-08-01 17:36:37
In the opinion of Mikko Savola, Member of Parliament for the Center and vice-chairman of the parliament’s defense committee, the withdrawal from the Ottawa agreement must be discussed in connection with the upcoming defense report.

Mikko Savola has also served as Minister of Defense. Henri Kärkkäinen
Savola reminds that there have been particularly emphatic statements from the ranks of the main government party about the withdrawal from the international agreement banning anti-personnel mines.
– Representative colleague and member of the defense committee Jarno Limnéll has proposed withdrawing from the Ottawa agreement. It has also been supported by other MPs of the coalition. It must be remembered that bringing the matter to the parliament for a decision is completely in the hands of the coalition.
– The coalition has the entire leadership of foreign and security policy. Värisuora has the position of the President of the Republic as well as the portfolios of the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Defense. So I ask, do Orpo, Valtonen and Häkkänen intend to bring the government’s motion to withdraw from the Ottawa agreement to parliament? The right place to outline the issue is the defense report that will be considered in the fall, Savola states.
Savola promises to support the proposal to withdraw from the agreement, if such a proposal is brought to parliament.
In Savola’s opinion, joining the Ottawa agreement was a wrong decision at the time.
– The project was driven particularly strongly by the president of the republic at the time Tarja Halonen and the agreement was ratified by the prime minister Jyrki Katainen under the leadership of the (kok) government, says Savola.
At that time, at the end of 2011, Savola himself voted against the ratification of the agreement.
– Having received pioneer education in Keuruu, I wonder about the arguments that were used at that time to give up anti-personnel mines. In Finland, mines were used to block, i.e. to slow down the enemy’s advance, to cause losses and to direct them to more favorable targets for defense. In the Finnish containment, each mine was marked exactly on the terrain and thus clearing them would be possible. Our anti-personnel mines had nothing to do with civilian casualties in third countries. In addition, our clearing pioneer activity is the best in the world.
– Fortunately, the Defense Forces received material to replace the anti-personnel mines at that time. However, even the materials that replace anti-personnel mines do not replace the cheapness and strong deterrence of anti-personnel mines, says Savola.

Shot glasses, cigarette butts and beer bottles – Maria Ohisalo faced a shock in Brussels – 2024-07-31 14:01:01
Maria Ohisalo recently started her work at the European Parliament. The new office made Ohisalo’s eyes widen.

Maria Ohisalo was shocked by her new office. Mikko Huisko
Maria Ohisalo, the former chairman of the Green Party and recent member of the European Parliament, shares her fresh feelings about Brussels on her Instagram account. The new European Parliament has started its work and every MEP has had the opportunity to get to know the Parliament’s work and operating methods.
Ohisalo says that the past weeks have contained a lot of different notes, passwords and learning new things.
– Then there was this application for rooms. Finally, when we got the key to that room, quite a surprise was revealed from there, Ohisalo says in the video.
The video shows Ohisalo walking towards his own office. Ohisalo describes the name plate next to the door, which reads “M. Ohisalo”.
– In fact, it turned out that our rooms are the former rooms of the German extreme right-wing party AfD, and all sorts of traces of them were found there, Ohisalo describes.
In the video, Ohisalo presents the items left in the room. There are moldy cigarette butts in the coffee cups, baskets with empty bottles can be seen in the cupboards and various refreshments in the fridge.
– The view is like this one on a Swedish ship. That is, to the interior of the parliament, Ohisalo describes the scenery visible from the window.
– The new office also has a toilet, which is a bit like a ship’s cabin. Here you can find shot glasses from the previous resident, razors and a toothpaste case, he continues.
Ohisalo says in the comments of his Instagram post that the former owners of the room have smoked cigarettes indoors.
– The whole place, with its carpets, smells like some kind of 70’s hovel, Ohisalo describes.
The Greens won two seats in the European elections. Ville Niinistö and Maria Ohisalo passed. In July, Niinistö started his second season as a coach. The former chairman of the Greens, Ohisalo, has previously worked as an MP and now left for Brussels.
