Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (Kok) also got to answer the question in the parliament’s budget debate. In addition to Lindtman, several opposition MPs wanted an answer.

Has the Prime Minister accepted the policy made by Minister Tavio?
 – 2024-09-25 06:17:09

SDP chairman Antti Lindtman demanded an answer from Prime Minister Petteri Orpo, which is the government’s foreign policy line in supporting women, girls and minorities. Jani Korpela

Chairman of the largest opposition party SDP Antti Lindtman demands the prime minister From Petteri Orpo (kok) answer Minister of Foreign Trade and Development City Tavion (ps) to the government’s deviating decision on Ukraine last week, especially when the president Alexander Stubb has intervened in the decision.

– Has the prime minister accepted Tavio’s policy and does the government intend to reevaluate this policy, Lindtman asked.

Lindtman told Orpo Iltalehte about his claim in the parliament on Tuesday, before Prime Minister Orpo came to the plenary session at three o’clock to answer MPs’ questions about next year’s budget.

In the plenary session, in addition to Lindtman, the same question was asked of the Prime Minister by other members of parliament from the SDP, as well as representatives of the center, the Greens and the Left Alliance from the opposition.

“A key element of foreign policy”

Tavio decided that Finland was left out of the equality alliance related to the reconstruction of Ukraine. MTV Uutisten, which was the first to report on the matter, according to sources, the reason was the alliance’s purpose to also promote the issue of gender and sexual minorities.

According to Lindtman, it has been crystal clear in Finland’s foreign policy that Finland supports Ukraine very strongly and that the rights of women, girls and minorities are a key element of Finland’s foreign policy.

– The foreign policy of a small country consists of what has been decided together and also of the actions taken by individual ministers.

Lindtman praised Stubb’s intervention

Lindtman thought it was good that the president of the republic Alexander Stubb intervened in Tavio’s activities.

– It is rare that the president has to intervene in the affairs of a minister working in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in this way. As far as I can remember, that hasn’t happened in ages, Lindtman said.

The President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb, told the Finnish media in New York on Monday that Finland will continue to support Ukraine in equality issues as before.

Stubb said that he was not aware of Tavio’s decision and that the information to the president of the republic and the president’s office was not circulated in this individual case.

The center hoped to correct the decision

Chairman of the SDP parliamentary group Titti Tuppurainen reminded in the debate of the plenary session that the entire nation has stood unitedly behind the support of Ukraine.

– Now this support has become distorted. By his own decision, Minister Tavio has left Finland out of the equality forum for the reconstruction of Ukraine. This is a significant departure from Finland’s line, which includes supporting the rights of girls, women and minorities always and everywhere.

Chairman of the center Antti Kaikkonen according to Finland’s Ukraine policy, confusion has now arisen.

– I recommend that you correct that decision and come back to the matter. It is important that we are consistent on these issues, Kaikkonen said.

Chairman of the Green parliamentary group Oras Tynkkynen you mentioned that Minister Tavio has reasoned that choices have to be made and that not all alliances can be entered into.

– However, it is about supporting Ukraine and the alliance that the Ukrainian government has been establishing itself. Prime Minister, can you assess that if it is indeed the case that leaving this alliance is due to allocations, would it be something that we could resolve together here, that when Ukraine asks, we are involved and we are supportive.

Green MP Hanna Holopainen also pointed out that Tavio’s decision deviates from Finland’s long line of foreign policy.

Orpo was in contact with Stubb

Prime Minister Orpo began his answer to the budget questions with the Ukraine theme, which emerged strongly.

– The Finnish government and the entire parliament are strongly committed to supporting Ukraine. The 25th military support package was just completed. At the same time as this more terrible decision, Minister Tavio made a decision on the funding of four million for Ukraine support, which is specifically about humanitarian support, Orpo said.

According to Orpo, in supporting Ukraine, Finland’s line strongly includes the rights and support of girls and women.

– This single decision has not changed Finland’s policy. Minister Tavio made the decision within his own authority.

Orpo said that he has agreed together with the president of the republic that the matter and Finland’s foreign policy line in general will be discussed in the tp-utt. TP-utva is a joint meeting of the Foreign and Security Policy Ministerial Committee and the President of the Republic.

Stubb defended the UN vote

Stubb also defended Finland’s vote in the UN General Assembly last Wednesday, which was criticized by the fundamental Finns and Christian Democrats of the governing parties.

According to Stubb, Finland did the right thing when it supported the statement demanding Israel to end the illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories within a year.

– Finland’s voting decision was completely correct, when the international court has been of the opinion that Israeli settlements are illegal. In previous votes concerning Palestine, Finland has taken a different line compared to many comparison countries, Lindtman said.

“There is no money to take such fines every month”
 – 2024-09-19 21:14:04

Pertti Salovaara was fined for speeding today.

Known as a radio personality Pertti Salovaara faced a nasty surprise today when he received fines of almost 1000 euros.

Contacted by Iltalehti, Salovaara says that he was speeding in an overtaking situation in Hämeenkyrö.

– There are many explanations in the world, but I had a remarkably powerful car under me. I came from Rovaniemi and wanted to go home in a hurry, Salovaara opens up the situation.

– In overtaking, I went a little too far.

The speeding occurred in an area where the speed limit was 100 km/h. According to Salovaara, his meter read about 132 km/h at the time of speeding.

The police noticed the overtaking situation and stopped Salovaara to fine him for speeding.

– I honestly told them my guilt and my income exactly, Salovaara admits.

– Stupidity is fined. It’s right that the police are there to catch drivers who endanger traffic. I have nothing bad to say about officialdom. I can only blame myself for this.

He was fined exactly 992 euros.

– Tonni then clicked from there. Well, quite a few business trips went down the drain, Salovaara sighs, but still laughs afterwards.

– In my case, I have to say that I learned my lesson from this job.

He also shared a picture of his fines on Instagram.

– I hardly ever drive over the speed limit, and the one time I do, of course, a police officer pulls up in front of me with his shoulder up. The amount to be paid was €992. In the case of a person from Meikä, it’s a lot, he writes on social media.

Although, according to Salovaara’s own words, he doesn’t often drive too fast, the incident woke him up enough that he plans to pay attention to his driving habits in the future.

– Now I will have a complete overhaul of my driving habits. Firstly, through the fact that it is dangerous in terms of traffic safety.

– Secondly, I don’t have the money to take such fines every month, he admits.

The government is making drastic cuts in many sectors, but NATO spending will be significantly increased in next year’s budget.

When Finland was about to join NATO, it was estimated that the costs of membership in the alliance would be around 70–100 million per year.

This year, the sum of NATO expenses for the Ministry of Defense and Foreign Affairs alone has been around 100 million euros.

On Tuesday, it was reported in the government’s budget briefing that next year, on top of the corresponding expenses, there will be an additional pot of NATO funding of EUR 67 million, which will finance the alliance’s increasing presence in Finland.

The NATO Land Forces Lower Staff (MCLCC) is being established in Finland.

Iltalehti asked at the press conference on the budget dispute, either the prime minister can tell the public that the NATO ground forces sub-staff will be established in Mikkeli.

On Tuesday, Orpo did not want to say where the subordinate staff will be placed.

– There is no decision about the lower staff. Finland gets a lower staff of the ground forces. Infra, the ability to receive (troops) and related investments must be prepared for the troops.

Iltalehti already reported in April that NATO’s sub-staff is coming to Mikkeli.

According to the Prime Minister, the money will also be allocated to promoting the ability to receive aid from allied countries.

In addition to the sub-staff, the presence of NATO forces in Finland is planned. It is about the so-called forward presence of ground forces (FLF forces). According to Orpo, new infrastructure is being prepared for the troops, among other things.

According to information from Iltalehti, an armored NATO brigade of 4,000–5,000 soldiers is becoming Finland’s protection.

According to the Prime Minister, additional investments are necessary in order for Finland to show its commitment to NATO.

– We are making NATO’s presence in Finland a reality. We will add 67 million to NATO’s presence in Finland, Orpo said.

According to Orpo, the investments are also necessary to build up Finland’s defense at a fast pace, so that everything that Finland wants can be extracted from the union. In practice, this means NATO’s strong commitment to the defense of Finland and NATO against the common enemy, Russia.

The appropriations for the entire defense administration will rise to almost 6.5 billion euros in next year’s budget proposal, which is about half a billion euros more than in this year’s budget.

Basic Finns ride with two strollers, the explanation is left to Orpo – 2024-08-30 00:19:23

Basic Finns ride with two strollers, the explanation is left to Orpo
 – 2024-08-30 00:19:23

Prime Minister Orpo at the opening of the anti-racism campaign on Tuesday. Fanni Uusitalo, Government Office

First, racism rocked basic Finns and the entire government in the summer of 2023. As a result, the government published a statement from the Government, which also included the launch of an anti-racism campaign. The whole government committed to this, so that the uproar could be put aside little by little.

On Tuesday morning in the Little Finland meeting rooms in Helsinki, the campaign in question was spectacularly kicked off under the leadership of the Prime Minister.

Through the Commitment2050 online service, the “We talk with actions” campaign invites organizations to fight against racism with concrete means.

Riikka Purra, the chairperson of Perussuomalaiset, took action immediately and announced at the party’s summer meeting in Kouvola that Perussuomalaiset as a party is unlikely to participate in the campaign.

Of course, Purra also reiterated that Perussuomalaiset has committed to the communication approved last year, on the basis of which a program of measures has been drawn up and an anti-racism campaign has now been launched.

But the commotion was ready again.

The political opposition will make sure that in the fall it will be heard from every corner that Perusfinlomaiset will not commit to the anti-racism campaign.

Prime Minister Orpo has and will have to explain.

It is very difficult for the Prime Minister to credibly tell why the government’s second largest party is not participating in the government’s campaign as a party. The opposition will tell the whole nation “how weak leader Orpo is”.

However, Orpo will swallow this because he wants to keep his government together so that it can complete its adjustment and labor market measures. So Orpo does not engage in an open battle with basic Finns.

The Basic Finns know this and that’s why they ride with two strollers.

PS’s ministerial and parliamentary group are committed to the anti-racism campaign, but the party is not.

It is a message to the party’s voters that even though the party in the government has had to commit to the campaign, it still has strong reservations about the campaign.

Basic Finns feel that the concept of racism has been expanded so much that political measures to curb immigration are also being subsumed under it. Criticizing and opposing immigration is the hard core of PS, and it cannot be undermined by any campaigns.

The action of the opposition parties in terms of participating in the racism campaign then has its own chapter. Both the SDP and the Greens have announced that they will not participate in the campaign because it is “polishing the government’s reputation” and it “washes the government’s hands of racism”.

The logic is a bit difficult to understand. SDP and the Greens therefore do not want to support anti-racism measures, because the initiator of these anti-racism measures is the wrong party.

Under the turmoil of the anti-racism campaign, the big issue of work-related immigration is simmering in the government.

RKP chairman Anders Adlercreutz outlined at the summer meeting of the party’s parliamentary group that more work-based immigration is needed in Finland. According to Adlercreutz, immigration registrations should be renegotiated as early as next week’s budget meeting.

Basic Finns dismissed Adlercreutz’s opening of raising net immigration to an annual level of 40,000 as “completely impossible”, and the coalition is not warming up to the numerical goal either.

The governing parties do not have a common view on how much and what kind of work-related immigration they are trying to attract to Finland.

Recently, employee residence permits have been granted mostly to the cleaning industry, industry, and care and health services, not to highly educated professionals. At the same time, we have widespread unemployment of more than 400,000 people.
