Richard โฃLinklater Captures the Spiritโ of French โขNew โWave in Upcoming Film
director Richard Linklaterโ sought to embody the essence of โฃthe French New Waveโ movement-not just its โaesthetics-in his latest project, โคfocusing on the personalities of key figures like Jean-Paulโฃ Belmondo, jean-Luc Godard, and Franรงoisโ Truffaut. The film aims โฃto recreate the feeling of being in the presence โof thes โฃiconic filmmakers and actors, prioritizing capturing their spirit over mere physicalโค resemblance.
LinklaterS approach centered on findingโข actorsโ who possessed the intangible qualities of their subjects. While belmondo’s grandson auditioned โฃand โdemonstratedโค acting ability, โขLinklater ultimately cast Aubry Dullin for his embodiment of Belmondo’s “light, airyโค [quality] rapid smile, happy-he struck me as Belmondo, like, ‘Iโฃ don’t careโฃ much. I’m here,โ but I’m floating through. โคI’m a boxer. I’ve got all theseโ things, ladies love โme,'” according to the director.โ This emphasis on feeling extended to the casting of actors portraying Godard, Truffaut, and Suzanneโ schiffman (played by Jodie Ruth-Forest).
The director described a pivotal moment during auditions where โฃhe videotaped a scene with the core cast and shared it with โขhis producer, resulting in a shared realization: “See how special thisโข is?’ And they’re like, ‘oh my God, I see what you’re talking about. It’s โthem, it’s them!’ And I’m โคlike, ‘Yeah, it’s them. This is what we’re going for.’ [you] just feel like you’re there with them.” Linklater prioritized the dynamic betweenโ actors, believing he had “caught lightning in a bottle” when they were together inโฃ the room.
