Coffee, Tea, and water Linked to increased Longevity, New Research Suggests
São Paulo – A recent study indicates a strong association between the regular consumption of coffee, tea, and water and a greater likelihood of a longer lifespan. While maintaining adequate hydration is widely recognized as crucial for health, emerging research highlights the specific benefits of these three beverages for arterial health and overall well-being,potentially contributing to increased longevity.
The importance of hydration is particularly pronounced during warmer months, with experts like nutritionist Carolina Cukier emphasizing the role of water-rich fruits in boosting fluid intake. “Especially fruits,” Cukier highlights, “are a great way to stay hydrated.” She advises against sugary drinks, advocating for unsweetened tea and coffee as preferable alternatives.
Coffee, a globally popular beverage, has been shown to possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties thanks to its caffeine content, which helps protect the endothelium – the tissue lining blood vessels. Moreover, coffee contains polyphenols like chlorogenic acid, combating oxidative stress and potentially reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Tea,particularly varieties derived from Camellia sinensis – including green, black, and white tea - offers similar benefits. These teas provide caffeine and phenolics, notably epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a powerful antioxidant with anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective properties.
However, experts caution against excessive consumption of any beverage, stressing the importance of balance within a healthy lifestyle encompassing physical activity, quality sleep, and stress management.
Special attention should be paid to hydration needs among the elderly, as the thirst mechanism becomes less effective with age. Conversely, individuals with certain medical conditions, such as kidney failure, should follow medical advice regarding fluid intake.
