-title Reiche’s Absence Sparks Boos at Heating Industry Meeting

Heating Industry Conference Erupts in Protest as⁢ Minister reiche ⁢Cancels Appearance

Berlin – A key industry conference focused on the heating sector was overshadowed wednesday by⁢ the absence of Economics Minister Katherina Reiche, sparking open frustration and criticism from attendees grappling with a collapsing market. Reiche cancelled her appearance just days in advance, citing “scheduling reasons,” a justification met with⁣ skepticism given prior commitments made to heating companies months ago.

The ‌cancellation quickly became the central topic of the event, with Frederic Leers, spokesman for the Federal Association of‍ the Heating Industry, stating on stage during a panel discussion, “The minister’s absence is a message that is getting across here.” ⁣

Attendees expressed a sense‍ of being disregarded, with one event organizer telling t-online, ”I don’t want to say that I want Habeck back. But at least he was here every year.” – a reference to former Economics Minister Robert Habeck’s consistent ‌attendance.

Reiche’s parliamentary state secretary,Stefan Rouenhoff, attempted to address the room on her behalf, but was met with initial laughter and then outright boos. “I ask you to be patient,” Rouenhoff said, visibly taken aback, as restless murmurs⁤ and shouts of “How much longer can we afford ⁣this patience?” ‌filled the hall.

The discontent comes as the heating industry faces a severe downturn. The Federal Association of the Heating‍ Industry ⁣(BDH) presented data at the ⁣conference showing‍ a 30% market collapse since the introduction of the⁢ “Heating‌ Law” – officially the Building Energy Act (GEG) – approximately two years ago, which initiated debate about the future of heating⁤ systems in Germany.

Canadian Airports Hacked to Broadcast Pro-Hamas Message

Pro-Hamas Messages Displayed After Cyberattacks at Three canadian Airports

TORONTO – Cyberattacks targeted digital display systems at Toronto Pearson,⁢ Montreal ‍Trudeau, and Calgary International ‍airports on Tuesday, resulting in the display of pro-Hamas messages and doctored images.⁤ The messages, which included images of militants and Israeli Prime Minister ⁤Benjamin Netanyahu, were crudely photoshopped ⁤around luminous red text.

The incident was ‍claimed by a user ⁤on social media, who spent⁣ Wednesday celebrating media coverage of the airport⁢ disruptions. Authorities have not yet identified the perpetrator ⁢or group responsible.

The attacks highlight longstanding concerns ⁣about Canada’s vulnerability‌ too⁢ cybercrime. Experts have described Canada and its public institutions as a⁣ “high-value, low-risk target” for cybercriminals, including state-sponsored actors. A recent forecast from the Canadian Center for Cyber Security indicated that state-sponsored cyberthreat actors are “vrey likely” ‍targeting critical infrastructure networks ‌in Canada and allied countries in planning for potential disruptive attacks. The centre identified China’s cyber program as ⁣the most sophisticated ⁢and active state threat to Canada⁢ currently.

David Shipley, CEO of Beauceron Security, a New Brunswick-based cybersecurity ‍firm, characterized Tuesday’s hack as a “stunt” rather than a serious attack, noting the absence⁤ of ransom demands.⁤ He also pointed to the perpetrator’s self-promotion ⁤on social media as evidence of inexperience.⁣ “When you’re victorious, you generally don’t need to self-promote,” shipley said. “It’s ⁣like ‍it’s the cyber equivalent of someone⁤ running around saying ‘I’m‍ cool’ – the moment⁣ that you say you’re‌ cool, you probably aren’t.”

Shipley further criticized the ⁣lack ‌of resources allocated to cybersecurity for local police departments and RCMP ‍detachments, stating, ‍”How is it [okay] in any way, shape or form for a 21st-century country to expect these tiny police forces to have any resources to help⁢ the airports in⁤ this case? It’s beyond ludicrous and it just highlights ‍we’re not a serious country.”

The incident underscores the growing threat of cyberattacks against critical infrastructure ⁢and the need for increased investment in cybersecurity measures.

Merz Pledges ⁤German Financial support for Gaza Reconstruction During Egypt Visit

Cairo, Egypt – Friedrich Merz, ⁣leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), affirmed Germany‘s commitment to providing considerable financial aid ‍for the reconstruction of Gaza during a visit to Egypt, according to statements released today.‌ The ⁢pledge comes amid growing international pressure to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and rebuild infrastructure devastated by recent conflict.

Germany recognizes that a complete, internationally coordinated effort is essential to effectively address ⁤the scale of devastation in Gaza and ensure long-term stability. The commitment reflects a broader German policy of supporting regional stability through advancement aid, particularly in areas impacted by ⁢conflict. The financial contribution will be contingent on ensuring aid reaches its intended recipients and is⁣ used for civilian ⁢reconstruction, not for Hamas.

A spokesperson for the German Development Ministry ⁢emphasized the necessity of shared responsibility, stating, “These enormous sums cannot be⁤ raised by any country alone.” ⁤The ministry believes‌ a ⁢fair distribution of costs among the international ‌community is crucial for successful reconstruction.

Merz’s visit also highlighted the importance of securing contributions from nations in the arab ⁤region, who are also seen ‍as key partners in the reconstruction process and stand to benefit⁣ from subsequent economic opportunities. According to CDU lawmaker Thorsten Stefinger, these nations are being⁤ encouraged to participate, recognizing the potential for economic cooperation alongside humanitarian aid.

The German commitment aligns with ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure a lasting ceasefire⁢ and ‌facilitate the delivery of humanitarian assistance to Gaza. The scale of the reconstruction effort is estimated‍ to be in the billions of dollars, requiring sustained international ⁣engagement to address the urgent needs of the affected population.

-title: Germany Accelerates Pension Reform, Plans Riester Successor

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 13, 2025

Germany too Fast-Track New Pension Scheme, Potential ‍Successor to Riester

Berlin – The⁤ German federal government is accelerating ⁢plans⁣ for a new state-sponsored pension scheme, potentially launching as early as 2026, aimed at addressing ‍the⁣ growing pension gap.‌ The initiative, dubbed the “early start pension,” will be available to all citizens over the⁣ age of 18.

The‌ move ⁤builds on⁤ previous work by former Federal Minister of Finance Christian ‌Lindner⁤ (FDP), who drafted a plan ⁤for a “retirement savings account” during⁤ the‍ last ⁣legislative‌ period. That proposal‍ centered on long-term, broadly diversified stock ‌market investments with⁢ state subsidies and tax ‌support during the savings phase, but without guaranteed returns on contributions – a key difference⁣ from the existing Riester pension.

financial sector leaders have welcomed the accelerated timeline.‌ Thomas Richter, CEO of the German fund association BVI, ⁢stated the reform “will help narrow the pension gap for 50 million people between the ages‌ of 18 and 66.” ⁢Thomas Soltau, board member of neo-broker Smartbroker, called the retirement savings account “a real game changer” if the current draft ⁢law ⁣remains unchanged.

Consumer advocacy group “Finanztip” also expressed support, advocating for a state-funded retirement savings account accessible to all consumers regardless of age or income. Editor-in-chief Saidi ‍Sulilatu cautioned ‌against repeating the complexities of the Riester⁣ pension, ‍stating, “In Germany we tend to complicate everything…People didn’t even know what they ⁤had signed.”

OpenAI Seeks Canadian Data Centres to Boost AI Capabilities

OpenAI Signals Interest in Expanding Canadian AI Infrastructure

MONTREAL ⁣- OpenAI is ⁢indicating a willingness to invest in Canada’s artificial⁣ intelligence infrastructure, even as it faces a copyright⁤ lawsuit from Canadian media outlets, according to recent statements. The company acknowledges a need to stimulate demand ⁣for AI infrastructure within Canada to support the country’s push for “digital sovereignty.”

The Liberal government is actively seeking ⁤to bolster‌ homegrown tech companies through procurement initiatives. Ottawa recently signed a non-binding agreement with ⁣Toronto-based AI ‍firm Cohere Inc.⁢ to explore AI applications⁢ within the public service. Prime Minister Mark Carney has also championed a sovereign cloud initiative aimed at increasing Canadian⁤ control over computing power.

Artificial Intelligence Minister Evan Solomon has described digital sovereignty ⁣as “the most pressing‌ policy and democratic ⁤issue of our time,” emphasizing that achieving‌ it requires collaboration with international ‍partners, including the United States.

Dev⁤ Saxena, a senior global affairs advisor⁣ with ‌OpenAI in Ottawa,⁤ stated in‍ an interview that‍ “global players” are essential to building Canada’s sovereign AI‌ capacity. ⁢”To actually ⁤build out some of this sovereign capacity in Canada, under ⁤Canadian jurisdiction, you actually do need global players at the table,” Saxena said. “No country can do it end-to-end. It’s ⁣just way too complicated of ⁢a supply chain, and way too⁤ expensive.”

Though, OpenAI⁢ is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with The Globe and‍ Mail and other Canadian media‌ companies, which‌ allege copyright infringement due to the use of news content⁣ to train its AI models. OpenAI maintains its practices are‌ permissible under copyright law and has argued that ontario courts⁤ lack jurisdiction ⁢over the case, ‌as the company does ‌not conduct business in the province.

Higher Social ⁤Security Contributions to Hit German Workers in January

berlin – German⁣ employees will⁢ face⁢ increased social security contributions starting‌ in January, as the government navigates mounting financial pressures on ‌the‍ country’s welfare system. The increase, while largely accepted as necessary due to existing funding gaps,is drawing criticism from both ⁣sides of the political spectrum, with concerns⁣ raised about the impact on businesses and ⁢the adequacy⁣ of the adjustments.

The rise in contributions comes as Germany‘s social security funds grapple⁤ with significant financial shortfalls, prompting debate over the long-term sustainability of the ⁣system. While politicians on the ⁤left argue the increases don’t go far enough, ‍the center-right CDU warns the move will negatively impact ⁤the business climate. State Secretary in the ‍Ministry of Economic Affairs, Gitta Connemann, labeled the draft “fatal for the⁤ business location,” stating it would “hit medium-sized businesses to ‍the core.”

Recent reporting from Tagesspiegel.de highlights the urgency of the situation, with economists warning of potential ⁣collapse if the government fails ‌to act decisively.A recent article⁤ quoted economist Schnitzer stating the welfare state is “not future-proof,” while another featured economics expert Grimm asserting that cuts to social services are “unavoidable.” Further‌ analysis from the publication details how breaking long-held taboos regarding social welfare reform may be ⁣necessary to address⁤ the systemic challenges.
