FDA & State AGs Warn of Risks with โCompounded,Counterfeit GLP-1 โWeightโค loss Drugs
A growing chorus of warnings is sounding regarding the potential dangers โof compounded and counterfeit versions of GLP-1 medications-drugs increasingly โฃpopular for weight loss-as authorities investigate a surge inโฃ unregulated โคproducts. โขThe FDA and โattorneysโ general from multiple โคstatesโฃ are urging caution and increased oversight amid โconcerns about unknown ingredients, dosages, and origins.
GLP-1 receptor โฃagonists like Zepbound and Wegovy areโ prescribed to treat obesity and related conditions, but demandโ has fueled a market for compounded versions-drugs โmixed by pharmacies-and outright counterfeits.Dr. Hsieh warns, “They justโฃ don’t โknow where it’s coming from. โThey have absolutely no idea what’s inโข it,โ how much is in it, and where it’s coming from. It’s that simple.” The FDA โhas โคissued a formal โwarning about these unapproved drugs, available here.
These concerns extend beyond the lack of FDA approval. Experts emphasize โขthe importance of combining GLP-1 use with lifestyle changes, including proper nutritionโ and exercise, to avoid โmuscle loss, weight regain, โand other side effects.”we say that GLP-1s โขare training wheels. They’re a tool. They’reโ not โthe cure. The cure is you learn how to eat differently, how to have different habits, how to have different ways ofโ thinking about food,” explains dr. Hsieh.
Pat, a former Zepbound user, successfully transitioned to a healthier lifestyleโข andโ is no longer on the medication. He credits his commitment to change, stating, “I was ready, and I โwas behind it.โข I knew I was going to make this work. It was time to make this work.I wanted to see my grandkids graduate from high school,so I was reallyโค going to follow the rules.” He affirmed, “I’m not going back to where I was because it’s too hard to get where I’m at.”
The issueโฃ has prompted โฃaction from state officials. โattorneys general from dozens of states, including indiana and Michigan, have jointly called on the FDA to โฃstrengthen itsโ crackdown onโฃ compounding and counterfeiting. The letter to the FDA can be found โฃ here, and Michigan Attorney General Nessel’s declaration is โคavailable โ here.
A spokesperson for the Indianaโข Attorney General’s office stated, “GLP1s are being used widelyโ by consumers both inside andโ outside of Indiana. As a product prescribed by licensed physicians โขand made in Indiana and elsewhere, GLP1s are certainly something that the Office is aware of and paying attention to. Keeping hoosiers safe and ensuring that they and localโ businesses are not being takenโข advantage of is โa meaningful priority.”
Consumers in Indianaโ who suspect issues with GLP-1 โขmedications can file a complaint here.
