Supreme Court Allows Defamation Case Against Kangana โคRanaut โคto Proceed
Kanganaโ Ranaut, actor โขand Member of Parliament, โhas withdrawn her petitionโข to the Supreme Court seeking toโฃ quashโ a criminal defamation complaint โfiledโ against her. The caseโข originates from a 2020 โretweet concerning the farmers’ protests againstโ the โnow-repealed farm laws.
A bench comprised of Justices Vikram Nathโ and Sandeep Mehta declinedโ to hearโ Ranaut’s plea onโ Friday, September 12, 2025, andโ permitted her counsel to withdraw it, suggesting she pursue remedies withinโ the trialโ court. This follows a previous โdismissal of her plea by the Punjab โคand Haryana High โฃCourt.
the Highโ Court hadโ ruledโ that Ranaut failed toโ demonstrate good faith in the allegedlyโฃ defamatory post. It also emphasized the “extra responsibility” borne by public figures โฃwith large social mediaโข followings toโข verifyโ the accuracy of their statements.
During โคthe Supreme Court hearing, Justice Mehta expressed concern over the content of โRanaut’s โretweet, noting she had “added her own comments”โ and “added spice” to the originalโค post.while Ranaut’s counsel stated a clarification had been issued,Justiceโ Mehta directed that the clarificationโ be presented to the trial court. The bench also cautioned โagainst arguingโค the โฃmerits of theโ tweetโค before โขthem, stating it couldโ potentially prejudice her defenseโค duringโข trial.
Theโ complaint was initially filed in January 2021 by Mahinder Kaur, a 73-year-old protester from Punjab, allegingโฃ defamation.โค Kaur claimed she was wrongly identified as Bilkis Bano, a participant in theโข Shaheenโข Bagh protests against theโค Citizenship (Amendment) Act, in a retweet shared byโข Ranaut. The โretweet falsely linked Kaur to the Shaheen Bagh protests while claiming โขshe was also involved in theโฃ farmers’ agitation.
The case is registered under Sections 499 and 500 ofโฃ the โindian Penalโ Code, pertaining โto defamation. A โฃsummoningโ order was issued byโ a Magistrate in Februaryโค 2022,โข requiring Ranaut to face trial.โค The High Court upheld this order, citing โขsufficient prima facie evidence of defamation andโ noting Ranaut’s failure to apologize after learning the data was inaccurate.
With the withdrawal of her petition, the Supreme Court recorded the matter as “dismissed โขas withdrawn,” allowing โคthe defamation case to proceed in โฃthe trial court.
