“Black Phone 2” Delivers Grisly Sequel,โฃ But Relies โHeavily โon Horror Tropes
AUSTIN, TX – Scott DerricksonS “Black Phoneโฃ 2,” premieringโ at Fantastic Fest 2025, plunges audiences โขback into the terrifying worldโค established by the 2021 hit, but struggles toโข escapeโ the shadows of itsโ predecessors and iconic horror films. The sequel, set to release in theaters on October โ17 via Global Pictures, revisits the chilling case of “The Grabber” and expands upon the โsupernatural elements introduced โin the original.
The film introduces new characters โalongside returning โคfaces, including โErnesto (miguel Mora),brotherโข to โa character from the first โขfilm, and gwen’s (Brooklynn Prince) suitor.Demiรกn Bichirโข portrays Armando, a camp supervisor โwith โขa direct connection to the campground’s dark history, and Arianna Rivas playsโข his equestrian niece, Mercedes.โ While attempts to infuse the dialog with โLatinx flair are largely unsuccessful, Bichir “does a heroic job carryingโข the burdenโข of explaining the film’s lore,” according toโฃ IndieWire’s review.
Though, the screenplayโฃ isโค identified as a keyโฃ weakness, burdened by “cringeworthy dialogue” and “unwieldy chunks of exposition.” The film also explores โคthemesโ of Heaven and โHell, and the โคvalidity of Christian belief, a commonโค trope in horror, but the reviewโ notes an “inconsistent way in whichโข it’s โฃapplied,” ultimately abandoning aโ possibly insightfulโ critique of organized religion.
Despite these narrativeโฃ shortcomings,โข Derrickson excels in delivering visually striking โhorror sequences. A standout scene features the spectral appearance of โฃboys murdered on โthe campgrounds in 1957, rendered with “creative gore โฃeffects” including a boy’s headโ being sliced diagonally on a windowpane. The film also โpays homage to “A Nightmare on Elm Street”โค with effects thatโข manipulate bodies โขlike marionettes.
Ultimately, the โขreview acknowledgesโ that much of โฃthe film’s โขstrength derives from established โขhorror conventions and Derrickson’s previous โwork.”All of the best things about this movie come from โother movies,” the reviewโค states, drawingโค comparisons to “The Shining” and “A Nightmare onโข Elm Street.” While enjoyable, this reliance on familiar elements prevents “Black Phone 2” fromโ exceeding “just good enough.”
IndieWire awarded the โคfilm a grade of B-.
