Richard โDickโ Eastland, the owner andย director of Campย Mystic in Kerrย County, Texas, died duringย the flash floodsย that struck Centralย Texas on Friday, his nephew confirmed on Facebook. Eastland was 74.
The Eastland family has owned and operated Camp Mystic, the Christian girlsโ summer camp, since 1939. The camp was founded back in 1926. Dick was the third generation to manage Mystic after he and his wife, Tweety, purchased the camp in 1974, serving as executive directors for over 50 years. Eastlandโs wife Tweety was found safe at home, officials said.
Eastlandโs children are also integral to Camp Mysticโs operations: Richard Eastland, their eldest son, serves as head chef and runs the dining hall; Edward Eastland, the youngest son, is the director at Camp Mysticโs original Guadalupe River site, and manages the camp with his wife, Mary Liz; and Britt Eastland, another son, directs Camp Mysticโs Cypress Lake campus, a newer addition established in 2020.
Dick Eastland wasย known for hisย involvement inย the West Kerr County community, serving on theย Hunt Independentย School Districtย Board and coachingย youth sports, particularly the West Kerr County Little League and the West Kerr County Little Dribblers. Eastland also notably survived brain cancer.
According to statements from camp officials and survivors, Eastland wasย last seen leading a group of girls from a cabin trying toย get them to safety. His body was later found near his vehicle.
On July 4, severe flooding in Texas Hill Country caused the Guadalupeย River to rise more than 25 feet in less than an hour, which caught many campers and staff off guard. Officials say 27 campers and counselors died at Camp Mystic, including young girlsย from variousย states. As of July 7, atย least 10 campersย and one counselorย remain missing. Statewide, the deathย toll from theย floods has reachedย at least 95, withย 75 people reportedย dead in Kerrย County. The Texas Nationalย Guard and localย authorities haveย deployed helicopters, boats, and dronesย to locate survivorsย and recover theย missing.
Survivors describedย scenes of confusion asย staffย worked to moveย campers to higherย ground. โWe wentย to bed thinkingย it was just aย normal thunderstorm,โ Callie McAlary, aย 16-year-old camper, told Fox News. โOne minuteย you see lightningย strike next toย your cabin, andย next to you, youย hear waterโs comingย up.โ
Campย officials andย survivors creditedย Eastland andย the staff withย helping saveย lives duringย the disaster. Texas Governor Gregย Abbott has since visitedย Camp Mystic, declaring aย state of emergencyย and pledging continuedย support for searchย and rescue operations. โI urge everyย Texan to joinย me in prayerย this Sundayโfor theย lives lost, forย those still missing, for the recoveryย of our communities, and for theย safety of thoseย on the frontย lines,โ Abbottย said in a statement.
Camp Mystic, on its website,ย says it is โdeeply grateful for the outpouring of supportโ and asks for โrespect and privacyโ as it charts a new path forward.
