Red Bull Backs Tsunoda Despite Pointless Streak, Focuses on Performance Betterment
Red Bull Racing Team Principal laurent Mekies has affirmed the team’s commitment to Yuki Tsunoda, prioritizing support for the driver’s performance over considering a mid-season replacement. This announcement comes as Tsunoda navigates a challenging period, currently enduring a seven-race stretch without scoring championship points.
Tsunoda’s recent struggles began following his return after Liam Lawson temporarily filled his seat during the Japanese Grand Prix. Since then, the Japanese driver has faced mounting pressure, recently setting an unwanted record within the Red Bull Racing organization. Excluding retirements, Tsunoda is the first Red Bull driver to fail to secure points in seven consecutive races, compounding concerns about his current form.
With just seven points to his name out of Red Bull’s total of 194 this season, the burden on reigning world Champion Max Verstappen to consistently challenge for race wins has increased. Despite calls for a second driver change, Mekies has firmly stated that the team’s focus remains on providing Tsunoda with the necessary resources and support to improve.
“The priority is to give Yuki what he needs to perform,” Mekies explained to Sky F1. “That’s where, with regards to the second seat, the priority is. Its what the team is concentrating on. They have been trying that for a number of races. Now we are trying to find ways together to make a further step.” Mekies expressed confidence in Tsunoda’s potential, adding, “There is no reason why Yuki’s performance cannot be what we have seen in the past. That’s what we are concentrating on right now.”
Recent Progress and Team Support
Despite the lack of points, Tsunoda has demonstrated incremental progress in the last two Grand Prix events, coinciding with the introduction of a new floor to his car at the Belgian Grand Prix. The performance gap between tsunoda and Verstappen has noticeably narrowed, with Tsunoda finishing just over one-tenth of a second slower than his teammate at the Hungaroring.
Mekies clarified that the decision to equip Tsunoda with the new floor was a collaborative team effort, not a direct response to his struggles. “No, no, absolutely not. It’s a team decision,” he stated. “All the team is trying to give Yuki the right confidence and the right tools, and he is working very well with this group.”
Mekies emphasized the importance of building Tsunoda’s confidence through a series of positive experiences, including strong qualifying performances and successful races. “You need that string of good feelings with a car, a good qualifying, and a good race to perhaps extract the next steps. And that’s where we’re trying to get to,” he concluded.
