Björk Files lawsuit Against Icelandic State on 60th Birthday, Citing Environmental Concerns
Reykjavík, Iceland – Musician björk Guðmundsdóttir publicly announced today, November 21, 2025 – her 60th birthday - that she is initiating legal action against the Icelandic state. The lawsuit stems from ongoing disputes regarding environmental protection and lasting practices within Iceland’s marine and freshwater ecosystems.
The legal challenge builds upon previous advocacy efforts by Björk, who has been vocal about concerns surrounding fish farming and marine spatial planning. Specific cases cited in her proclamation include issues in Seyðisfjörður regarding marine spatial planning, fish-farm escapee incidents in the Westfjords (Tálknafjörður and Patreksfjörður), and a dispute in Sandeyri where a fish farm was constructed against the wishes of local farmers. Björk framed the lawsuit as part of a larger effort to contribute to the “30 by 30” global initiative – a commitment to protect at least 30% of land and sea areas by 2030.
“Stay tuned for this one because this landowner is nowhere near giving up and neither are we,” Björk stated in a social media post. She emphasized that the cases are intended to be “exemplary” for broader environmental protection efforts.
Björk has consistently championed environmental causes, previously telling NME that addressing climate change is “the only thing that really matters.” Her recent collaborations, including the single “Berghain” with Rosalía and Yves Tumor, have occurred alongside her continued activism. The outcome of this lawsuit could set precedents for environmental regulations and landowner rights in Iceland, impacting future development and conservation efforts.
