Eurovision has been held every year since 1956, except for the covid 2020 year, making it the longest-running international televised music competition and one of the longest-running televised programs in the world. Fifty-two countries have participated in it at least once.

Last year’s winner was the Swedish singer Loreen. The Vesna girls group defending the national colors finished in tenth place.

EBU’s Rare Exceptions: Why Some Countries Are Barred from Eurovision Participation

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com December 5, 2023

EBU very exceptionally refuses the participation of countries. The organization of broadcasters emphasizes the “non-political nature of the competition”. A few years ago, the EBU made an exception for Russia due to the war in Ukraine. That was unprecedented at the time.

“The exclusion of Russia was not obvious and partly came about after pressure from other Eurovision countries,” says Paelinck. “At the same time, the situation was somewhat different than now with Israel. Then an EBU country had invaded another EBU country.”

“An exclusion is very exceptional,” the Eurovision expert continues. “In the 1990s, what remained of Yugoslavia (Serbia and Montenegro) were also not allowed to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest due to the civil war, but that was due to international sanctions from the United Nations that the EBU followed.”

“Netherlands Records Lowest Eurovision Final Viewership in 10 Years”

In the host country United Kingdom, the final of the Eurovision Song Contest set viewing figures. A total of 11 million Britons watched the big climax of the song competition in Liverpool. That is a viewing figure record, according to the BBC.

In the Netherlands, the viewing figures were disappointing. The final of the Eurovision Song Contest, without the Netherlands, attracted an average of 1.84 million viewers on Saturday evening. It was therefore the most watched program of the Saturday evening. But it is also the worst-watched final of the song festival in ten years.

Presenters Alesha Dixon, Julia Sanina, Hannah Waddingham and Graham Norton

Saturday’s figures are in stark contrast to previous years. Since 2016, the Eurovision final has almost always attracted more than 4 million viewers. The record was set in 2021, when the song competition took place in Rotterdam. Then more than 5.5 million people watched the final evening.

AVROTROS has promised to evaluate the entire process surrounding the selection and loss of Mia and Dion in the semi-finals.

In Liverpool, the presentation of the Eurovision Song Contest was in the hands of well-known British TV personalities Alesha Dixon, Hannah Waddingham and Graham Norton. They hosted the event with the well-known Ukrainian rock star Julia Sanina. Sweden eventually won, ahead of Finland and Israel.

“Loreen Wins Eurovision Song Contest for Second Time with ‘Tattoo’, Czech Group Vesna Places Tenth”

The winner of the international Eurovision Song Contest was the Swedish singer Loreen for the second time. She had success with the song Tattoo. The Finnish performer Käärijä finished second, the Israeli No’a Kirel third. The Czech girl group Vesna took tenth place in Saturday’s final. The results were announced on Sunday night around a quarter to two in the morning.

The singer Loreen won for the first time in 2012, this time she succeeded with the song Tattoo. Photo: Reuters | Video: Eurovision Song Contest

Loreen won for the first time in 2012 with a song Euphoria. According to the AP agency, she became only the second Eurovision participant who managed to repeat the success. Only Irish singer Johnny Logan won twice before her in the 1980s. Thanks to the thirty-nine-year-old star, whose parents come from Morocco, Sweden also caught up with Ireland in the historical tables. Artists from both countries have won Eurovision seven times already.

The tenth place for the Czech Republic is the group Vesna with a song My Sister’s Crown second best. The best so far, sixth, was the singer Mikolas Josef in 2018. Vesna consists of musicians from the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory in Prague, in addition to three Czechs, there are also a Slovak, a Russian and a Bulgarian.

Last year, the Ukrainian Kalush Orchestra won the competition, so this year, according to the rules, this country was supposed to host Eurovision. But it has been resisting the Russian invasion for 14 months, which is why the final of the 67th year was held in Liverpool, England. The fate of Ukraine resonated here. The opening film showed the Kalush Orchestra singing and dancing in the Kyiv subway, where people normally hide from Russian attacks. Last year’s winners then performed directly at the venue of Eurovision, which this year was held under the slogan “united by music”.

While tens of thousands of people were enjoying themselves in Liverpool and an estimated 160 million on TV screens, Ukraine faced further Russian airstrikes. According to foreign agencies, some were also directed towards the city of Ternopil in the west of the country, where the electronic duo comes from Tvorchi. It represented Ukraine this year, finishing sixth.

An Italian singer was in fourth place among the 26 finalists Marco Mengonithe Norwegian singer finished fifth Alessandra. Representatives of Belgium, Estonia and Australia also made it to the top ten.

The first year of Eurovision took place in May 1956. The most famous winner in history is considered to be the Swedish group ABBA, who broke through in 1974 with a hit Waterloo. Other famous faces who have succeeded in the competition include the Canadian Céline Dion, who represented Switzerland in 1988. The Czech Republic participated for the first time in 2007. Already in 1968, Karel Gott performed in the competition, then called the Eurovision Grand Prix, but as a representative of Austria.

“Dutch Eurovision Duo Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper Adapt Their Song Before Semi-Finals”

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 28, 2023

NOS News•today, 22:52

The Dutch Eurovision Song Contest duo Mia Nicolai and Dion Cooper have adapted the Eurovision song. In the new version, a tone and a half higher has been chosen. Nicolai and Cooper sang the song Burning Daylight in the new way in the program Khalid & Sophie.

According to broadcaster AVROTROS, the original version of the song can be sung in a raised position in the semi-final on May 9 and no rules are broken. At Khalid & Sophie, Nicolai and Cooper sang an acoustic version of the song, with strings and backing singers.

Watch the performance here:

The duo also talked about their two previous live performances that were widely criticized. Broadcaster AVROTROS, which organizes the Eurovision Song Contest in the Netherlands, also rightly called criticism of the performances. “We really want to do well,” said Mia Nicolai Khalid & Sophie. “Of course it affects you if it doesn’t work out the way you want. And you also know from each other: we can just do this. Why is this not working?”

“It’s very crazy,” Cooper added. “I am a musician because I am a lover. I think music is the most beautiful thing there is. I want to share that. When that fails twice for whatever reason, and people fall for it, it hurts. “

‘Fought’

According to Cooper, solutions have been sought after the two false live performances. The duo found out that they had been “fighting” with the song for the past six months. “It’s very difficult for our voices to perform. And you won’t find that out if you do it in a safe training environment.”

They then sat down with a producer to see how the song could be modified. “We kept looking until it was right,” he said. “Everything is one and a half tone higher, so you can approach things differently with your voice. And that means that it is now suddenly singing, instead of shouting and fighting.”

AVROTROS director Eric van Stade said that the two maligned performances were intended to see how things would go for the two. “We let them practice on purpose and we have seen that things are not going well yet,” said Van Stade. “We now know what is wrong, the whole of the Netherlands has seen that. The creative team that has been working for a long time now continues, precisely on those points to get the vocals right. And with only one goal: to give a good performance in Liverpool to put down.”

Graham Norton Rules Out Presenting The Late Late Show in Ireland

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com April 22, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Graham Norton fans have been left disappointed after the popular talk show host rejected rumours that he would be the next presenter of Ireland’s The Late Late Show. The news comes as the show’s current host, Ryan Tubridy, announced plans to step down from the role in the coming years, sparking speculation about who would take over. However, Norton has firmly put an end to any speculation, stating that he has no interest in the job. So, what led Norton to say “eh, no” to one of Ireland’s most coveted presenting roles? Let’s take a closer look.

Graham Norton, the celebrated TV personality and author, has declined the opportunity to present the Late Late Show, making it clear that he would find it extremely challenging. Norton responded with a firm “eh, no” when asked by radio host Brendan O’Connor if he would be tempted to return to Ireland to host the Late Late Show after current host Ryan Tubridy steps down.

“That job is so hard. That job is such a hard gig,” he said. Norton expressed that he prefers to chip away at a very silly bit of show business and talk to actors and musicians. The Late Late Show, on the other hand, requires one to cover a wider range of topics and changes of tone, in addition to the fact that it is a long show.

Norton has been married to Scottish film-maker Jono McLeod for almost a year, and when asked about married life, he said that it is “good so far”, with a laugh. He was also asked about including an unhappily married gay couple in his new book, and Norton expressed his love for Ireland’s plethora of gay couples. His idea for including the couple was “there was almost like a shotgun wedding thing going on — where people were thinking ‘oh God, now you voted for it, I suppose we’ll have to do it’”.

When asked about returning to Ireland in recent years, Norton explained that his father’s illness brought him back more often. Norton’s father had Parkinson’s disease, and his condition required Norton’s visits to Ireland more frequently. Norton believed that his parents were invincible and that he could always come back and nothing would have changed. However, when his father died, it was a wake-up call for Norton, and he realized that he loved Ireland again thanks to the people in Bandon, who made him fall in love with Ireland again.

In May, Norton will host the Eurovision Song Contest in Liverpool. He plans to do his running commentary throughout the contest and take a leaf out of the late Terry Wogan’s book. Norton joked that he did not want to give up the commentary gig entirely since someone else might be better than him.

In conclusion, Norton expressed his admiration for the Late Late Show’s current host, Ryan Tubridy, and said that he would never be able to do his job. Norton’s love for Ireland has grown immensely over the years, and he hopes to visit Ireland more often when the situation gets better. Norton’s humor and unpredictable nature make him a national treasure, and his works are loved by millions.

In conclusion, the decision of Graham Norton to turn down the opportunity to present The Late Late Show has been met with disappointment by many fans. However, the beloved talk show host has made it clear that he intends to stay with his show on the BBC, where he has already achieved immense success. While it may be tempting to speculate on who will eventually replace Ryan Tubridy, it is important to take note of the great job he has done in keeping the show a beloved part of Irish TV culture. Ultimately, the future of The Late Late Show remains as exciting and unpredictable as ever, and the eyes of the nation will no doubt be watching eagerly to see what happens next.
