Europol Operation Nets 11,566 Tonnes of Counterfeit, Contaminated Food & Beverages
The Hague, Netherlands – A coordinated international effort led by europol, dubbed OPSON XIV, has โคseized 11,566 โฃtonnes of illicit and substandard food and 1.4 million โฃliters of fraudulent beverages, โฃauthoritiesโ announced today. The annual operation, targeting food crime across theโ globe, resultedโ in 11 arrests linked to offensesโฃ ranging from โฃmislabeledโฃ produce โto โขthe illegal trade of contaminated seafood and trafficking.
This year’s OPSON XIV highlights the escalating sophistication of food crime networks,โ which pose aโ significant threat to public healthโ and โeconomic stability. The operation, involving authorities from โ51 countries, uncovered instances of โpurposeful mislabeling -โ includingโค 2,000 tonnes ofโ bananas from Madeira falsely soldโข as originating from the Canary Islands – alongside the seizure of 33 slaughtered animals, 159 sheep and goats, and approximately 200 kilograms โคof โฃanimal โintestines. Investigationsโ are ongoing to determine the full โextent of the impact and to prevent โfurther fraudulent activity.
Beyond mislabeling, the โoperation exposed a complex network โinvolved in the illegalโค harvesting and sale ofโ contaminated shellfish, leading to 11 arrests and โฃthe confiscation of over 7โ tonnes of product destined for multiple European markets. Authorities estimateโ the operation disrupted a criminal โขenterprise projected to generateโค โฌ2.5โ million in โweekly profits, with associated crimes including environmental damage, money laundering, document โforgery, and suspected human trafficking.
Europol continues to support national authorities in dismantling these criminalโ networks and safeguarding the integrity of โขthe food supply chain. OPSON,now in it’s fourteenth year, remains โคa โคcrucial initiative โin โthe global fight against โคfood fraud and adulteration.
