Amidst rising oil prices and geopolitical tensions, Slovakia is exploring its geothermal energy potential as a key step towards energy independence, according to Martin Hojsík, Slovak Vice-Chairman of the European Parliament. In a recent interview,Hojsík highlighted Slovakia’s abundant geothermal resources and addressed the controversial EU mission in Slovakia, which sparked heated reactions from prime Minister Robert Fico [1].

Geothermal Energy as a path to Independence

Hojsík emphasized that reducing dependence on fossil fuels is crucial for both climate protection and national security. He pointed out that Slovakia possesses meaningful geothermal resources that could be harnessed for heating, reducing reliance on imported gas. According to a 2023 report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA),geothermal energy could supply 5% of global heating and cooling demand by 2050,significantly decreasing reliance on fossil fuels [2].

Did You Know? Slovakia sits on vast reserves of geothermal energy, enough to heat a large portion of the country.

EU Mission Controversy and Financial Oversight

The interview also touched upon the recent European Parliament mission in Slovakia, which focused on the management of EU subsidies. Prime Minister Fico strongly criticized the mission, even labeling its head,Tomáš Zdechovský,a “bounty murderer.” Hojsík described the goverment’s reaction as a “shameful theater,” asserting that the European Parliament has a legitimate role in ensuring that public funds are used lawfully and effectively.

He further explained that such missions are standard practice

«Experienced and loyal, Fitto will do great things in Europe»

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 28, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

«Raffaele Fitto has demonstrated that he knows how to manage the delegations that Giorgia Meloni has entrusted to him in Italy. And in Brussels he will do just as well, thanks to his experience and his honesty”: Renato Perrini, group leader of the Brothers of Italy in the Puglia Regional Council and who has always been particularly close to the new vice-president of the European Commission, has no doubts.

Councilor, what value does Fitto’s appointment have?

«It is a historic achievement for Puglia, for the South and for Italy, which have never been so central in Europe. And, above all, a great opportunity for these territories.”

For what reason?

«Fitto will directly manage a trillion-dollar portfolio, the reform of the cohesion funds, the final phase of the national Pnrr and future reforms linked to budget policies. And, as executive vice president, he will have supervision over agriculture and fishing, transport and tourism, maritime economy and social housing. All fundamental matches for Italy and Puglia.”

Why, in your opinion, did Meloni propose Fitto as commissioner?

«Raffaele is an honest and loyal politician and administrator, as well as very expert. And in Italy he has demonstrated that he knows how to manage the delegations that the Prime Minister has entrusted to him well.”

Yet the left hindered Fitto’s nomination…

«Not only that: the left first tried to minimize the role and delegations entrusted to Fitto in Europe, then tried in every way to ensure that he did not obtain them. But Italians have their pockets full of this policy that looks out for its own interests and not the good of the national team. And, fortunately, the President of the Republic and many men from the institutions, including those from the centre-left, appreciated and supported Fitto’s appointment as European Commissioner”.

How does it feel to see your mentor at the top of continental politics?

«Between me and Raffaele there is a friendship based on loyalty and honesty. I was at his side even in the most difficult moments because I have great respect for him and his family. So I’m proud and excited.”

Roberta Metzola on “B” : We need unity because the US speaks the language of power –

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 27, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Europeans must remain united in order to defend their interests because the US speaks and understands the language of power, the president of the European Parliament said in an exclusive interview with “Vima”. Roberta Metzolain anticipation of his return Donald Trump in the White House.

“President Trump was elected by the American people and we should not be naive or surprised that his administration is defending US interests. Frankly, this is nothing new in American history.” he emphasized. But, he added, and “we were elected by Europeans and must therefore equally defend European families, industry and products”. He stressed, however, that Europeans need to show more “self-confidence”.

Referring to Euro-Atlantic trade she said it was worth over one trillion euros and supported around 16 million jobs on both sides of the Atlantic. “No single member state can meet this economic firepower alone. If we stand together and defend Europe’s interests, I am confident that we will be able to promote and support our European businesses.”

“United against Trump”

Much debate has begun in Brussels about which leader could take on the role of “broker” with the Trump administration, given the problems that have arisen during the US president’s first term in the White House. Trump’s “friends” in the Old Continent, prominently the Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban but also its Italian counterpart Georgia Meloni – both members of the so-called European “hard” Right – seek such a role.

Metsola, however, disagrees with this scenario. “I don’t think any leader alone – whoever he is – can be as effective a conversationalist as the EU as a whole. Our strength lies in speaking with one voice, not twenty-seven individuals. And I think the language of power is one that the US speaks and understands quite well.” stressed the Maltese politician.

“They need each other”

In general, however, the European top official emphasized that Euro-Atlantic relations must be strengthened regardless of political developments. “The world may be changing, but our commitment to strengthening the transatlantic relationship must remain steadfast. The European Union and the United States cooperate in areas that extend far beyond politics. Common history, common values, such as freedom, democracy, human rights, as well as open societies and markets, are the foundations of our alliance.”

She emphasized that she herself, as president of the European Parliament, will focus on what “unites” the USA and Europe. “Therefore, in my contacts with the speaker of the US House of Representatives I will continue to seek alignment with the US in providing joint solutions to common global challenges, such as the need to support Ukraine.”

“Now is the time to promote a stronger transatlantic bond in defence, in trade, in global affairs – rather than focusing our attention on lecturing or, worse, moralising on areas where we may have different perspectives. After all, with bilateral trade reaching historic highs, it is clear that both partners are of great importance to each other.” he added.

I will continue to seek alignment with the US in providing joint solutions to common global challenges, such as the need to support Ukraine

Focus on the economy

Last week the pro-European political groups (center-right European People’s Party, Eurosocialists and Liberals), after intense behind-the-scenes consultations, finally managed to overcome their differences and agree on the new Commission. The big issue now in Brussels is whether this pro-European alliance will be able to last and promote the plans of the new European Commission that will officially take over on December 1st.

“We can still count on a pro-European majority in the European Parliament. It’s easy to just find clues to solve complex issues. However, finding effective solutions requires patience and the art of compromise. I am sure that we will be able to continue to find common pro-European solutions in this House.”

With reference to the priorities of the next period, he underlined the need to initially enter “class in our own house. People have every right to demand a better economy and more and better jobs. Labor productivity in Europe lags behind the US, growing at only 0.8% per year compared to 1.1% in the US over the past decade. This is more than a statistic. It’s a wake-up call and we need a collective response.”

He also emphasized the need for open and fair trade, guided by international rules and European values. “To unlock the full growth potential of the single market, member states must work together. Harmonization, consolidation and simplification are vital. If Europe is serious about becoming a global player, we need a large European economy. We have to act, because we have what it takes.”

The AfD invited Donald Trump to address the European Parliament –

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com November 18, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) has invited US President-elect Donald Trump to address the European Parliament, in a letter obtained by the German news agency (dpa).

Such a speech by Trump would show a “strong commitment to breathe new life” into the EU-US relationship, the letter to European Parliament President Roberta Metzola, dated November 12, said.

The AfD, together with other far-right parties, form the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group in the European Parliament.

The letter was signed by René Aust, AfD German MEP, and Polish MEP Stanisław Tiska, as ESN co-chairs. The letter was also signed by AfD MEP Christine Anderson, member of the ESN executive committee.

So far there has been no public reaction from the president of the European Parliament to the letter. Metsola’s team said it always considers all proposals from political groups in the European Parliament.

Metzola’s team also pointed out that there is already an open invitation to current US President Joe Biden.

In other political groups of the European Parliament, there is widespread concern about the election victory and the new term of Trump.

There are fears that the Trump administration could freeze military aid to Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression and force the country to negotiate and agree to sweeping concessions to Russia.

Economic relations between the European Union and the United States could also deteriorate again with Trump’s first term in office.

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com October 10, 2024
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

He received a request from the Hungarian authorities to release the immunity of Peter Magyar, name Thursday Roberta Metsola. The President of the European Parliament (EP) said that the matter will be forwarded to the legal committee of the EP.

This specialized committee will provide an opinion on the matter, on which the entire representative body can vote.

The immunity of the EP representative who leads the Tisza Party has also been suspended he asked in September Office of the Attorney General. According to the statement of the board, Péter Magyar was having fun in a Budapest club in June, where a man, among others, took a video of him with his mobile phone. After one of Magyar’s companions noticed that the man was recording, they got into an argument with him. During the argument, Magyar suddenly took the phone out of the man’s hand and put it in his pocket. He did not return the phone even after several requests, he denied having it. After leaving the night club, she went towards the Danube, followed by several people, including the man. The representative walked straight down to the shore and deliberately dropped the phone into the Danube. “This behavior lends itself to the realization of the legal facts of the crime of theft,” the statement said.

Hungarian according to a paid promoter wanted to record a video party. “In vain we asked him to stop and delete from his phone the recordings that many young people did not agree to, or at least to stop filming. After he talked about my family and children, I took the phone out of his hand, which led to a physical threat. He started pushing me, physically threatening me and those who were having fun with me. “

About the circumstances of the case in this article we wrote in more detail.

Tamás Deutsch, head of the Fidesz-KDNP EP delegation, wrote a letter to all the representatives “Regarding the immunity issue of Peter Magyar, his outrageous behavior and the common law crime he committed”. In return, Magyar promised, due to defamation reports Deutsch, and giving up her immunityif the government joins the EU prosecution.

“If we believe in the rule of law, why do we politicize the issue?” – he asked Manfred Weber, leader of the EP Tiszas group, the European People’s Party in the center. At the EP debate the next day Viktor Orbánapart from Deutsch also mentioned the case.
