Polish footballers beat the Faroe Islands 2-0 at home in European Championship qualifiers thanks to two goals from captain Robert Lewandowski. Portuguese coach Fernando Santos’s men are in Group E after four rounds from third place, losing two points to the leader Czech Republic and one point to second Albania. Their match in Prague ended in a 1:1 draw.

The Poles had an advantage over the outsider in Warsaw, but they struggled for a long time in the end and even heard whistles from the fans. Several chances were eliminated by Lamhauge, the goalkeeper of the Faroe Islands was helped by the crossbar after Lewandowski’s header at the beginning of the second half.

The home team decided the match only in the final twenty minutes. Faerö played in the penalty area and Lewandowski converted the penalty in the 73rd minute. The 35-year-old Barcelona gunner added an insurance with a lob over the crossbar in ten minutes and improved his tally in the national team to 81 goals in 143 games.

France beat Ireland 2-0 in Paris and won for the fifth time in Group B without conceding a goal. In the 19th minute, Tchouaméni opened the scoring after Mbappé’s pass, shortly after the change of sides, substitute Marcus Thuram increased the score with his first national team strike. The world vice-champions did not lose to the Irish in the ninth consecutive duel.

Hungary, which will host the Czech national team in Sunday’s warm-up, won 2:1 in Serbia in the battle for first place in Group G. In Belgrade, Attila Szalai scored an own goal in the 10th minute, but the visitors turned the score around before the break after goals from Barnabas Varga and Orbán. The Hungarians maintained their invincibility in the qualification and built a three-point lead over the Serbs.

The Netherlands won at home over Greece 3:0, in the “B” group, they caught up with today’s opponent by points and jumped to second place behind France. The hosts decided the match in Eindhoven already in the opening act, when De Roon, Gakpo and Weghorst scored.
