UNโ Imposes New Sanctions on Iran Over Nuclear Program, Sparking Tehran’s โOutcry
Newโฃ York โ- The United Nations Security Council โคhas approved stringent economic sanctions against Iran in โresponse to its revived nuclear program, a move swiftly condemned โขby Tehran. The decision follows mountingโข pressure from European nations concerned over Iran’s compliance with the 2015 Joint โExtensive Planโค of Action (JCPOA).
According to โคreports fromโ AFP on Saturday, September 20, 2025, the Unitedโฃ Kingdom, France,โค and Germany – key signatories of the JCPOA – allege that Iran has โฃrepeatedly โขviolated the terms of the agreement, originally designed to prevent the progress of nuclear weapons. โ
“We urge (Iran) to act now,” stated British Ambassador Barbara Woodward, emphasizing the โฃneed for immediate action while also leaving the door open for diplomatic solutions during next week’s UN General Assembly in New York.
However, Iran vehementlyโ rejected the sanctionsโ as “coercive politics.” Iranian Ambassador to the UN,Amir Saeid Iravani, denounced the vote as “hasty, unneeded, and unlawful,” asserting that Iran doesโฃ not recognize any obligation to comply.
The escalating tensions come despite recent attempts at negotiation. Iranian Foreign minister Abbas Araghchi had previouslyโข presented whatโฃ heโ describedโ as a “just and balanced” proposal to European powers aimed at avertingโ the re-imposition of sanctions. โ
French President Emmanuel Macron โindicated earlier this โคmonth that he anticipated the โฃreinstatement of international sanctions by the endโฃ of โSeptember. While France’s UN Ambassadorโ suggested a negotiated settlement remained possible, the Western trio โขmaintained that progress in talks โhad stalled.
