India Urges Swift Conclusion to EU โฃFree Trade Agreement
New Delhi โข- September 3, 2025 – โIndia is seeking a “decisive โฃconclusion” to ongoingโ negotiationsโข for a free trade agreement with the European Union,โ External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated today. the call for expedited talksโค came duringโ a joint press briefing following โdiscussions with German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul, signaling a renewedโ push for deeper economic ties with Europe.
The India-EU โfree trade agreement, under negotiation for over a decade, has the potential to significantlyโ boost bilateral trade adn investment, creatingโฃ economic opportunities for both regions. A triumphant agreement would streamline commerce, reduce tariffs, and foster collaboration in key sectors like technology, pharmaceuticals, andโข agriculture.Progress has been hampered by disagreements โฃover issuesโฃ includingโข data localization, intellectual property rights, and agricultural subsidies, but recent diplomatic efforts suggest a potential breakthrough is within reach.
Jaishankar highlighted the โคbroad scope of discussions โขwith Wadephul, encompassing areas โsuch as economic cooperation, climate change,โฃ defense, and technology.โ He specifically welcomed Germany’sโ commitment โto doubling trade with India and acknowledged German efforts โto โคaddress โexport control concerns.โ
“We appreciate Germany’s โaim โto double trade with India,” Jaishankar said, adding thatโฃ Wadephulโข had pledged full German support โฃfor the India-EU FTA. Cooperation in the burgeoning semiconductor sector and the development of โgreen hydrogen technologies were alsoโ identified as key areas for future collaboration.
