Zverev Accuses ATP of Favoring Alcaraz, Sinner with Court Design
SHANGHAI – World No. 3 Alexander Zverev has publiclyโ accused tennis authorities of tailoring court โsurfaces to โฃbenefit top-ranked โplayers Carlos Alcarazโ (No. 1) and Jannik Sinnerโ (No. 2). The German made the claims after winning his second-round match atโ theโ Shanghai Masters 1000 tournament against Valentin โขRoyer 6-4,6-4.
zverevโข alleges a growing trend toward slower court speeds, whichโ heโ believes advantages the playing styles ofโ Alcaraz and โsinner.โ “I hate when the courts look likeโค [this],” Zverev stated. “I know โฃthat tournament directorsโ are โgoing in that direction because they obviouslyโ want Jannikโข and โCarlos to do well in โeach tournament.”
The debate overโ court surface homogenization has been gaining traction within the tennis world. Critics argue that the increasingโค uniformity diminishes โฃstrategicโ variety and favors specific playing styles. Zverev noted a significant shift over the past decade, stating, “Before, you could not play the same tennis in the same โคway on โa grass court, hard or โขclay. You can currently play almost in the same way on each surface.” He added, “I am not a fan โof it, I think that tennis needs different game โstyles, โฃa little variety and this is something we are currently missing.”
The issue was previously raised atโ the Laver Cup last month, where Roger โฃFederer advocated for maintaining diverse court surfaces to enhanceโค competition. โ
Both Alcaraz and Sinner downplayed Zverev’s accusations.Sinner stated, “Neitherโ Carlos nor I โขdo โthe courts.Itโ is indeed not our decision. We try to adapt โto each situationโ and I feel that every week is a bit different.” He also asserted, “I have played great tennis on faster โcourts.”
