UCL researchers in the UK say, “Men who take medication have an 18% lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.”

Erectile dysfunction treatment ‘Viagra’ /AFPBBNews=News 1 Research results have been published showing that erectile dysfunction treatments such as Viagra and Cialis can reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. This is the result of comparing the rates of Alzheimer’s disease between those who took the drug and those who did not. According to the BBC on the 8th (local time), Dr. Ruth Brouwer’s research team at University College London (UCL) in the UK conducted a study published in the American Academy of Neurology’s journal ‘Neurology’ on the 7th, “A study targeting more than 260,000 men. “The results showed that men who take this drug (erectile dysfunction treatment) have an 18% lower risk of developing a disease that causes dementia (Alzheimer’s).”

Researchers explained that they discovered that an erectile dysfunction treatment attacks ‘beta-amyloid’ plaques that accumulate in patients’ brains, and that this has the potential to change the way Alzheimer’s disease is treated.

Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitor (PDE5I), an erectile dysfunction drug like Viagra, was originally developed to treat high blood pressure and angina, but is currently mainly used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction. This drug is known to work by acting on cell signal transmitters, which may be related to memory, and also affects brain cell activity. Studies on animals have shown that erectile dysfunction drugs have a brain-protecting effect. Dr. Brouwer’s research team looked at the prescription records of men aged 40 or older (269,725 people) diagnosed with erectile dysfunction between January 2000 and March 31, 2017, and compared them with men who did not take the medication. During a follow-up period of 5.1 years (median), 8.1 cases of Alzheimer’s disease occurred per 10,000 people in the group prescribed erectile dysfunction medication, and 9.7 cases per 10,000 people in the group that did not take the medication.

The researchers explained that men who were prescribed a large number of erectile dysfunction drugs had a lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. “This suggests that regular use of the drug may have a greater impact on the disease.” However, he added that more research is needed to prove that erectile dysfunction treatments are effective for Alzheimer’s.

/Photo = Getty Image Bank Researchers evaluated that although this study did not confirm evidence that erectile dysfunction treatment itself reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s, it was able to suggest a new research direction. “More research is needed to confirm these findings, learn more about the potential benefits and mechanisms of these drugs, and investigate optimal dosages,” Dr. Brouwer said. Professor Tara Spiers-Jones, professor at the University of Edinburgh and president of the British Association for Neuroscience, said: “This study does not conclusively prove that erectile dysfunction drugs reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, but it is a good sign that these types of drugs are worthy of further research in the future. “We provide evidence,” he said. Dr. Francesco Tamagnini, a neurophysiologist at the University of Reading, said: “If a drug (an erectile dysfunction drug) can cross the blood-brain barrier, it could exert its therapeutic effect either by directly affecting neurons or by increasing blood flow. However, these two hypotheses are different. “Everyone needs to be tested,” he pointed out.

The Role of Fibroblasts in Achieving an Erection: New Research from Karolinska Institute

Researchers from Sweden’s Karolinska Institute have studied cells that fulfill an important, but previously unknown function in achieving an erection: fibroblasts. This connecting tissue in the erectile tissue of the penis helps achieve an erection. And the more erections a man has, the more fibroblasts, according to the study, which appeared in the journal Science.

It was already known that hormones and the relaxation of blood vessels play a role in an erection, but the role of fibroblasts had not previously been investigated. In this mouse study, erections were induced in males by stimulating neurons in the brain. This led to an increase in the number of fibroblasts. And conversely, the number of fibroblasts decreased with a smaller number of erections.

The fibroblasts appear to play an important role in the supply of blood to the penis. They absorb the hormone norepinephrine, which causes the blood vessels to dilate. The more fibroblasts are present, the more effective this process is.

Penis fitness

The researchers conclude that it is important to remain sexually active to maintain erectile function: use it or lose it. They compare it to running: if you walk regularly, over time it becomes easier to breathe while you run.

“A wonderful study,” responds Marij Dinkelman-Smit, urologist-andrologist at Erasmus MC and not involved in the research. “Research into erectile dysfunction has always focused on the smooth muscle cells and the lining of the blood vessels. We knew that fibroblasts are common in the penis, but now we also understand more about their function.”

Sexologist Cobi Reisman also finds the research interesting. “The discovery of the role of fibroblasts is really new and the conclusion of the Swedish researchers is completely correct,” he says. “We always give that advice. Nature had already thought of that: night and morning erections are fitness for the penis.”

The study still needs to be repeated in humans, but lead researcher Christian Göritz points out that erections are achieved in a similar way in all mammals, except that male mice have a bone in their penis. The blood supply will therefore be even more important in humans than in mice, Göritz expects.

New Viagra

The researchers hope that their findings will eventually lead to a new treatment for erectile dysfunction. Dinkelman-Smit can understand that: “We now have Viagra, but it does not work for a third of men. And alternatives such as injections or even an erection prosthesis are invasive and drastic.”

Dinkelman-Smit is at a conference of the European Society for Sexual Medicine in Bari, Italy. “At these types of conferences, there is a great search for effective alternatives, but none have been found so far. This new research helps us understand where we could intervene.” But she doesn’t expect quick results: “That’s still a long way off.”

JAKARTA – There are some sport who can handle it erectile dysfunction which many men experience. One of them is Kegel exercises which can help reduce erectile dysfunction by strengthening the perineal muscles and increasing blood flow to the penis.

Type sport Others can help improve overall health, which can also help relieve erectile dysfunction . This is the condition of the inability to maintain an erection, a problem that occurs in many men for various reasons.

This is often caused by physical conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and low testosterone. Other causes include psychological problems, blood flow problems, hormonal fluctuations, and nerve damage.

Exercises that can overcome erectile dysfunction besides Kegel exercises

The following are sports that can overcome erectile dysfunction as reported by Health Line, Monday (8/1/2024).

1. Kegel exercises

Kegel exercises can also be beneficial for men. In particular, this exercise helps strengthen the bulbocavernosus muscle. This important muscle performs three functions, namely allowing the penis to fill with blood during an erection, pumping during ejaculation, and helping to empty the urethra after urination.

To do repetitions of Kegel exercises, squeeze the muscles, hold for five seconds, then relax. Repeat this 10 to 20 times, two or three times a day. You may want to try it in a variety of positions, including lying down with your knees raised, sitting in a chair, and standing.

2. Aerobics

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia —

A study revealed that para astronaut vulnerable to experience erectile dysfunction after returning from space travel. Check out the research.

This is stated in a study that is claimed to be the first study to determine the impact of galactic radiation and weightlessness on men’s sexual health.

NASA-funded researchers found that galactic cosmic rays and to a lesser extent microgravity can damage the function of erectile tissue, with detrimental effects potentially lasting for decades.

In the report, the researchers expressed their concerns regarding “New health risks to consider in space exploration.”

They called for astronauts’ sexual health to be closely monitored upon their return from future space missions, noting that certain antioxidants may help counter adverse effects by blocking harmful biological processes.

“Despite the long-lasting negative impacts of galactic cosmic radiation, the functional improvements caused by acutely targeting redox and nitric oxide pathways in tissues suggest that erectile dysfunction may be treatable,” said Dr Justin La Favor, an expert in neurovascular dysfunction at Florida State University and co-author senior in this research.

Collect The Guardianthe warning comes amid a renewed focus on space missions, as NASA and other major space agencies prepare for long-term expeditions to the Moon and more ambitious trips to Mars.

NASA’s Artemis program aims to send astronauts to the moon as early as next year and a manned mission to Mars is tentatively scheduled for 2040 at the earliest.

Since the dawn of the space age, scientists have explored the impact of weightlessness and cosmic radiation on human physiology. This work has led to the implementation of preventative measures, including special exercise programs on the International Space Station (ISS) to protect astronauts from bone and muscle loss.

But according to La Favor and his colleagues at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in North Carolina, the impact of spaceflight on erectile dysfunction has not been explored.

“Although erectile dysfunction affects more than half of men over 40 years of age and is an important factor in life satisfaction, the impact of space travel on erectile function remains unclear,” they wrote in the journal published in Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB).

Earth is strongly protected from cosmic radiation by the planet’s magnetic field and its large atmosphere, but on the moon and Mars and in space in between there is no effective barrier.

Inside the ISS, the crew is protected by shields and the earth’s magnetic field, yet in one week they still receive as much radiation as a person on earth receives in a year.

Without humans present, the researchers turned to mice to explore the impact of spaceflight on male physiology.

In a series of experiments, dozens of mice were suspended by harnesses at a 30-degree angle and exposed to simulated galactic cosmic rays at NASA’s Space Radiation Laboratory in New York.

Analysis of mouse tissue one year later revealed that even low exposure to galactic cosmic rays increased oxidative stress in the animals. This disrupts the function of the arteries that supply blood to the penis and erectile tissue. The weight reduction also has an impact but not as significant.

“Collectively, these results suggest that the neurovascular function of erectile tissue may be impaired throughout the remaining sexual health of astronauts after returning to Earth from prolonged space exploration,” the authors wrote.
