Trump Credits Erdoğan‘s Role in Securing Gaza Ceasefire Ahead of Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit
SHARM EL-SHEIKH, EGYPT - October 10, 2023 – US President Donald Trump announced today that israel and Hamas have agreed to the first phase of a ceasefire plan in Gaza, attributing a key role in the negotiations to Turkish President Recep Tayyip erdoğan. The announcement came as Trump prepared to attend the Sharm El-Sheikh peace Summit in Egypt, alongside President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and leaders from over 20 countries.
“President Erdoğan was very helpful in getting this done,” Trump stated on October 9th, referring to the ceasefire agreement. The agreement, signed in Egypt following ongoing negotiations, went into effect in the early hours of October 10th with Israeli government approval.
The Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit brings together a diverse group of international leaders, including Egyptian President al-Sisi, US President Trump, Turkish President Erdoğan, Jordanian King Abdullah II, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin hamed Al Thani, bahrain’s King Hamed bin Isa al Khalifa, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and French President Emmanuel Macron. Leaders from the Greek Cypriot Management (Nikos Christodoulides) are also in attendance.
Several nations are represented at the prime ministerial level,including Germany,Iraq,England,Italy,Spain,Greece,Armenia,Hungary,Pakistan,Canada,Norway,the United Arab Emirates,and Kuwait.
High-level representatives are also present, including Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Arab League secretary General Ahmed Abu ghait, European Council President Antonio Costa, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Japan’s Ambassador to Cairo Fumio Iwai.
The ceasefire comes after a period of intense conflict. Between October 8, 2023, and the implementation of the ceasefire, attacks in the Gaza Strip resulted in 67,682 fatalities and 170,033 injuries, according to reports.
Trump is expected to return to the USA on Tuesday, following a prior visit to Israel where he met with families of Israeli prisoners and addressed the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament.
