Four models of Hyundai Motor Group selected as the safest car in the US IIHS crash test

In the crash evaluation announced by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Hyundai Motor Group ranked three vehicles in the ‘Top Safety Pick Plus (TSP+, Top Safety Pick+)’ rating, and one model in the ‘Top Safety Pick+’ category. It was announced on the 26th (Sun) that it was selected for the ‘Top Safety Pick (TSP)’ rating.

The vehicles that received the TSP+ rating were ▲Hyundai Motor Company Palisade ▲Kia Telluride ▲Genesis G90, and the TSP rating was received by Hyundai Motor Company Sonata.

In particular, the Telluride proved its excellent crash safety performance by obtaining the highest grade in all evaluation items, and the Palisade and G90 received TSP+ ratings this year as well last year, proving their safety once again.

The results of this crash evaluation are more meaningful in that they have met more stringent evaluation standards from this year.

IIHS, a non-profit organization established in 1959, annually comprehensively evaluates the crash stability performance and crash prevention performance of vehicles released in the US market and announces the results.

Vehicles with the highest level of safety are given a TSP+ rating, and vehicles with a good level of performance are given a TSP rating.

Starting this year, it has become difficult to obtain an excellent grade as the side collision and pedestrian collision prevention evaluation standards have been raised and the headlamp evaluation criteria have been applied more strictly.

In the side impact evaluation, the object colliding with the vehicle became heavier and the collision speed increased. (Collision object about 1,497kg → about 1,896kg, collision speed about 49.8 km/h → about 59.5km/h, impact energy increased by 82%)

In addition, the pedestrian collision avoidance evaluation has been added to a night test that was not previously available, and the headlamp evaluation must also receive an ‘acceptable’ grade or higher in the entire trim for both TSP and TSP+.

In order to receive a TSP+ rating, a total of four collision safety items are required: ▲driver-side small overlap front ▲passenger-side small overlap front ▲moderate overlap front ▲side collision. You must achieve the highest grade of ‘good’ in the evaluation. The roof strength and head restraint evaluation, which were in the previous evaluation, were excluded from this year.

In addition, the day/night front collision avoidance system test (vehicle and pedestrian) must receive a grade of ‘advanced’ or higher, and the headlight evaluation must receive a grade of ‘acceptable’ or higher in the vehicle’s overall trim.

For the TSP rating, out of four crash safety items, ▲driver’s seat small overlap ▲passenger seat small overlap ▲frontal impact evaluation, the highest grade ‘good’ must be obtained, and ▲side impact evaluation ‘acceptable’ must be rated above.

In addition, the vehicle’s overall trim must meet a rating of ‘advanced’ or higher in the daytime front crash prevention system test (vehicle and pedestrian) and ‘acceptable’ or higher in the headlight evaluation.

An official from Hyundai Motor Group said, “In this reinforced IIHS crash test, major models showed excellent results and proved safety.” [끝]
