Abruzzo Environmental Workers Strike for Fair Contract and Improvedโฃ Conditions
Environmental hygiene โworkers in Abruzzo will participate in aโ national strikeโฃ on Friday, October 17th, protesting for better wages,โ improved safety measures, and a renewed national contract. The protestโข will center โaround the Government Palace in Pescara, with workers โคrepresented by FP Cgil, Fit Cisl, Uiltrasporti, and Fiadel.
Theโ strike stems from stalled negotiations โwith employer representativesโค – โUtilitalia, Cisambiente-confindustria, Assoambiente, and โคthe Centrali Cooperative – who unions say haveโ demonstratedโ aโฃ “total closure โand โขlack of will” to renew the single collective bargaining agreement โฃfor environmentalโ services. โUnions โemphasizeโค the renewal is “essential” to enhance health and safety protections, โaddress wageโ erosion due to inflation, and reinforce โฃworkers’ right โคto strike.
According to FP-Cgil Pescara secretaryโ Massimo Di giovanni, workers have experienced a 16% decrease in purchasingโ power, and a keyโ objectiveโ of the โnew contract is to recover โขthis lost โขground. the unions are also seeking clarity on worker classification, โan issue not addressed in the previous โขcontract (2022-2024).
Specific concerns in the โคPescara region include the physical โคstrain on โขwaste collection operators, who handle 600-800โข bins nightly, a task increasingly challenging forโ workersโข over 55. this highlights the need for attention to worker turnover.
While the potential for โprivatization in Pescara appears to have been mitigated by Mayor Carloโฃ Masci’s stance and the โhealth of the local “Ambiente” company, the โissue remains a concern in other areas of Abruzzo.Unions insist on beingโ involved in any potentialโ privatization process to ensure service quality and โขworker protections. Thay continueโข to โadvocateโ for public solutions.
Further demands include improved conditions for procurementโ workers and plantโ workers’โ contractual articles.
The Abruzzo regional protest will โconvene in front of the Pescara prefectureโ at 12:00 PM โonโ October 17th and is expected to continue until at least 1:00 PM. This action is part of a nationwide โpresentation by environmental โคhygiene โworkers seeking a fair and comprehensiveโ contract.
