Zhuhai, โฃChina – Broadcastโ gymnastics, a discipline popular โacross โmainland China for decades, is gaining traction in hong โKong as the city prepares to compete in the National Games finals this weekend. Twenty athletes from theโ Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) are โขamong the approximately 220 participants converging on Zhuhai for the โคevent.
Eight provincial teams qualified through preliminary rounds, joining co-hostsโ Guangdong and Hong Kong in the finals.โข The Hong Kong team, comprised โคofโ four men and sixteen women ranging in โage from 31 to โค60, represents a pioneering effort to establish โขthe โsport within the โคcity. While โขcommonplace inโ mainland China’s schools and workplaces, broadcast gymnastics is a relatively โnewโค activity for โฃHong Kong residents.
“It is indeed very common in mainland China to be applicable in their โขstart ofโข school,โข andโข start of work, and then after school, โafterโ work,” explained Hong Kong team member Julian Law. “But for us, here in Hong Kong, it’s actually quiet a new sportโฆ And we are the first ones in Hong Kong to be really performing this.”
The sport emphasizes synchronized movements and technical โขprecision, judged on โa mark deductionโ system based on โขlimb angles – deductionsโ increasing with deviations from โprescribed positions (straight, 45 degrees, 10 degrees, 15 degrees). Artisticโ performance, including โrhythm and synchronization with music, also contributes to the โคscoring.
Fellowโ team member Fiona Liu, whoโ grew up in Xi’an were broadcastโ gymnastics was a daily school ritual, highlights the sport’s โinclusivity. “Some of theโฃ professional athletic activities are done under the age of 28, even the age of 25,” Liu โฃsaid. “But this kind of activity is done throughout all age rangesโข and all kinds of people.Evenโ if you got โขhurt in the early yearsโฆ you can do this kind of sport too.”โค
Liu hopes โฃHong Kong schools will adopt broadcast gymnasticsโ to reduce academic stress and buildโ camaraderie, emphasizing participation over โขcompetition: “They don’t โขhave to rank first in the game, theyโ just have to take part in it, and โคto get to know everyone in the class, and to have aโ way to know everyone in the morning.”
