Guelph Opens New Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge Over Speedโ River
Guelph, Ont., november 24, 2025 – A new accessible pedestrian โandโค cyclingโค bridge connecting Emma Street and Earl Street officially opened today, enhancing active transportation options within the city. Mayorโ Cam Guthrie joined community members for a ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of the project.
“This new bridge provides an crucial active transportationโ link across the Speed river for surrounding neighbourhoods,โ and alsoโฃ the wider community,”โ said Mayor Guthrie.โ “By connecting โขpeople to the Downtown trail, thisโ bridge provides people with increased access to and from downtownโ Guelph.”
The 81-meter โคbridge is part ofโ ongoing upgrades to โขthe Speedvaleโ Avenue East corridor,aimedโ at improving infrastructure for pedestrians,cyclists,drivers,and transit users. Kyle Gibson, โActing General Manager, Engineering andโข Transportation Services, stated, “The City is excitedโ to deliver this new bridgeโฆ We appreciate โthe community’s support and patience throughout theโ bridge โคdesign and construction process.”
The City of Guelph engaged theโค community in the bridge’s design process, gatheringโ input through anโ online survey in October 2023. over 500 responses were โreceived,and theโฃ steel girderโ bridge design submitted byโค Entuitive and BT Engineeringโข – โคthe community’s preferred choice – was ultimately selected. Construction โฃbegan in April and was completed by looby Construction.
