Aggravated Kidnapping: Elgin Man Found ‌Guilty in Violent Assault Case

Elgin, Illinois‍ – A Kane County jury delivered a guilty verdict Wednesday against Darnell L. Rhodes, 34,​ for aggravated kidnapping and‌ assault. The conviction stems from a harrowing 2023 incident⁣ involving a violent attack on a woman known to the defendant. This case highlights the severity‍ of kidnapping and the lasting trauma inflicted upon victims.

The Crime Unfolds

In March 2023, Rhodes, along with Lloyd D. Hayes Jr. and Roger A. Heaps, ‌allegedly kidnapped a woman and subjected her to a brutal ‌assault. ⁢Authorities state the victim was ⁣threatened with a knife⁢ and forcibly transported to a residence where⁣ she was restrained with electrical cords.

The ‍assault included multiple stab wounds‍ -​ four to the legs‍ – and physical‌ beatings that resulted in a fractured left rib, a fractured right pinky,​ and significant bruising and trauma to her head, face, and ⁣arm. The victim sustained injuries that left both of ‌her eyes swollen shut.

Prosecution’s Perspective

Assistant State’s Attorney Mark ⁣Stajdohar,who prosecuted the case‌ with ASA Matthew Picton,described the attack as “one of the ugliest unprovoked attacks”⁢ he has ⁢witnessed in his 25-year career.”All three of these men deserve to be in prison as of their heinous actions,and our communities are safer with​ them off the streets,” Stajdohar‌ stated.

The victim, despite the enduring physical and emotional consequences of the attack, has shown “remarkable⁣ courage and resilience” as​ she continues her ‍recovery, according to Stajdohar.‍

sentencing and Ongoing Cases

The jury found Rhodes guilty of⁢ aggravated kidnapping inflicting ⁢great bodily harm, a Class X felony under Illinois law. His ‌next court appearance is scheduled for September 25 at 1:30 p.m.at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Roger ​A. Heaps previously pleaded guilty⁢ to one count of armed violence and was ‌sentenced to‌ 20 years ‌in prison ⁤in January 2024. Lloyd⁤ D.Hayes Jr. currently faces eleven felony ⁤counts, including attempted ​murder, armed violence, and ‍aggravated kidnapping, with a status hearing scheduled for‌ September 12 at 9 ​a.m.
