POWELL, Ohio – The columbus Zoo and Aquarium announced the birth of a male Asian elephant calfโ late Tuesday,โข marking a โขhistoric moment as the zoo’s second elephant birth within โขa single โคyear. born at 10:41 p.m., the 222-pound calf represents a significant win for elephant conservation efforts.
This dual birth โค- following the โarrival of Phoebe’s son, Frankie, in 2021, and Rita Jean four months ago – is a first in the Columbus Zoo’s nearly 100-year โคhistory. Whileโ Asian โขelephants face ongoing threats of habitat loss and declining genetic diversity, successful births within accredited zoos, facilitated by collaborativeโ breeding programs, are โcrucial to bolstering the species’ future. The โคzoo’s animal care and conservation medicine teams are providing 24/7 monitoring to ensure the calf’s healthy development โas he begins to stand,โ nurse, and explore. The โขcalf’s father, Sabu, resides at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical โGarden. His โฃpairing with Phoebe was arranged through a national zoo initiative โfocused on maintaining healthy, genetically diverse populations of endangered species. Phoebe’s herd at the Columbus โฃZoo also includes a 23-year-old female, a 24-year-oldโ male, andโข Sunny, a 16-year-old โelephant, with her โฃown calf, Ritaโ Jean.
Currently, the calf is not on public display to allow for uninterrupted bondingโ withโฃ Phoebe and continuousโ veterinary observation. The Columbus Zoo will share updates regarding public viewing opportunities, naming plans, and other milestones as thay become available.
