Osaka Expo 2025 Showcasesโข Global Sustainability Efforts,Climate Impact, and Women’s Empowerment
The upcoming Osaka Expo 2025 is โhighlighting critical global issues, with a strong โfocus โขon sustainability, the realities of climate change, and the advancementโ of women’sโ rights. Yvonneโฃ Burton, โคdiscussing the expo, detailed several exhibits demonstrating innovative approaches โandโ impactful presentations.
One prominent example is the NEOM Green Hydrogen Complex, owned by NGHC,which โขis described as “the world’s largest plant producing โขgreen hydrogen-based ammonia from renewable energy,” powered by wind and solar โคenergy. Burton also noted that the expo features contributions from smallerโฃ andโ less affluent nations, โshowcasing โคtheir land conservation and environmental protection โขstrategies.
Aโฃ especially impactful exhibit comes from Brazil, offering a visceral demonstration of climate change’s effects. Burton โฃdescribed a large screen representing the sun andโ planet, transitioning through colors to illustrate environmentalโค health. “When they get to the reds โฃand the orange and kind โof the violence of climateโ damage, everything’s deflatedโ and dark,” she explained, noting the exhibit incorporates โขsound, color changes, and hanging elements to create a “jarring” and “exceptional” experience. Staff โคare present to provide further explanation.
Japan’sโ pavilion centersโข on the circular economy, with the โฃtheme of interconnectedness between life andโ life. Reflecting the country’s vulnerability to natural disasters, the pavilionโค prioritizes “soft materials” for construction, emphasizing โtheir durability and repairability. Burton highlighted the use of โคbamboo – which bends but doesn’t breakโค – and “cross laminated โฃtimber,CLT,” which is easily dismantled and repurposed.CLT is increasingly being incorporated into international โbuilding codes as a sustainable alternative for walls, roofs, floors, and ceilings, due to its fire resistance and seismic resilience.
The โExpo โalso features an extensive women’s Pavilion, sponsored by Cartier, dedicated to tellingโข the stories of women and activists. The pavilion presents statistics on global gender โequality and hosts numerous events.
Burton emphasized aโฃ key message conveyed by the Japanese โpavilion: individual agency in creating a sustainableโค future. The pavilion encourages visitors to recognise their role in circular solutions, reminding them that “it all โstarts with youโ and the decisions that you make โฃon a daily basisโฆit’s โคall our obligation โfor theโ Earth’s โขsustainability.”
