Iranian Foreign Ministry Investigating Visa Cancellations with Saudi Arabia and Other Countries

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, announced on Monday that canceling visas with some countries, including Saudi Arabia, is a “subject under investigation” by the ministry.

Kanaani said, in a press conference, “There are several plans and ideas being discussed with the relevant institutions, and it is necessary and natural to send the expert and the final summary to the Council of Ministers after studying all the political and security aspects, in accordance with the law of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” according to the Iranian News Agency (IRNA). .

Saudi Arabia and Iran reached an agreement on March 10, 2023, sponsored by China, stipulating the return of diplomatic relations between the two countries and the reopening of the two embassies.

Regarding relations with Egypt, he stated that there have been “positive developments recently, after the talks between the two countries and the meeting of the foreign ministers of the two countries in New York.”

He added, “These talks will continue with the joint political will that has been formed,” stressing that Iran is “serious about developing relations with regional and Islamic countries, and will respond to every positive step with a positive step.”

According to the agency, the spokesman expressed his “hope to create a new atmosphere and positive steps between Iran and Egypt.”

It is noteworthy that the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, last month, that Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry met with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, at the headquarters of Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

The ministry spokesman said, via the “X” platform: “The foreign ministers of Egypt and Iran are now meeting at the headquarters of the Permanent Mission of Egypt to the United Nations,” and published pictures of the meeting.

Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi described the meeting as “it could be a step to start developing relations” between Tehran and Cairo.

Relations between Cairo and Tehran deteriorated after the “Islamic Revolution” in Iran, and witnessed a noticeable improvement during the era of the late Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi, but the development of relations did not last long with the removal of Morsi and the “Muslim Brotherhood” from power, as relations returned to a state of stagnation again.

The Price of Progress and Prosperity: President El-Sisi’s Controversial Statements Spark Social Media Debate

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – Activists on social media shared statements by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi about the price of progress, prosperity and development at the expense of hunger and deprivation, which sparked widespread interaction.

Al-Sisi said in a statement he made on the sidelines of the “Story of a Homeland” conference on Saturday: “If the price of progress and prosperity for the nation were not to eat and not drink, we would not eat or drink… If effort, development and progress were the price of hunger and deprivation, be aware, O Egyptians who do not advance, and be aware, O Egyptians, who say we eat.” better”.

Al-Sisi said that during the last ten years in which he ruled Egypt, there were “trumpets of lies, slander, and active rumors that slander every action and course you take… You are not appreciated for what you do for their sake, and when you do this, you are abused and your officials and their families are abused.”

He added: “All the details of the corruption against Egypt during the past ten years were an extension of building a state of mistrust for the Egyptian person, to be part of the Egyptian character… When I say that the work (implemented by the government) is corrupt and ill-considered, I oppress it and put dirt on it.” “.

The Egyptian President expressed his lack of interest in the outcome of the elections, despite prevailing expectations that he would win a third presidential term. He repeated the Qur’anic verse: “Say, ‘O God, Owner of the kingdom. You give kingdom to whomever You wish and take away kingdom from whomever You wish, and honor whomever You wish and humiliate whomever You wish.’” He continued: “No one gives anything to anyone, and no one will take anything from anyone.”

Wael Hanna Pleads Not Guilty in Senator Menendez Case: Accused Businessman Released on Bail

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 27, 2023

(CNN) – Businessman Wael Hanna, accused in the case of Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the US Senate, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday before the federal court in Manhattan and confirmed that he was not guilty. The court released him on bail worth $5 million and handed over his travel documents.

The indictment against Menendez and his wife, Nadine Arslanian Menendez, stated that they accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in exchange for exploiting the senator’s position for the benefit of the Egyptian authorities.

Wael Hanna was arrested on Tuesday morning at John F. Kennedy Airport upon his return from Egypt, his lawyer, Larry Lustberg, told reporters after the court hearing.

Lustberg added that Hanna returned to the United States to face the charges, while his wife and children remained in Egypt, where they all live most of the year.

According to the indictment brought against Wael Hanna, along with Menendez and others, last week, he faces charges of conspiracy to commit bribery, as well as conspiracy to commit Internet fraud.

Hanna is subject to surveillance and a curfew that requires him to be at his home in New Jersey from 8 pm until 8 am. He is also prohibited from contacting the other defendants and witnesses in the case without the presence of lawyers. All shares in his company, Capital Management EG, will also be kept as a guarantee for his release.

His lawyer said he will try to run his business, but it remains to be seen whether this business will continue.

Prosecutors allege that Senator Menendez agreed and sought to pressure a senior USDA official in an attempt to protect the business monopoly granted to Hanna by Egypt.

According to the indictment, Nadine, the senator’s wife, facilitated meetings with Hanna and other Egyptian officials.

Menendez was highly influential at the time as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Wael Hanna’s lawyer said that the Egyptian businessman was a friend of Nadine for many years before she started dating the senator in 2018. He also added that he would not consider Menendez a friend of Hanna, and said that he did not know whether Wael Hanna had done that or not, that is, made contacts. With Egyptian intelligence.

Lustberg told reporters after his arraignment that Hanna had pleaded not guilty “because he has pleaded not guilty.”

Hanna allegedly facilitated an agreement to provide bribes to the senator and his wife, Nadine, in exchange for the senator’s influence on matters that benefited him, the Egyptian government, and others.

The US Department of Agriculture contacted Egypt in 2019 to object to granting Hanna monopoly rights related to the supply of halal meat to the United States.

Hanna is scheduled to return to Manhattan court on October 2.

Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam Negotiations with Egypt and Sudan: Progress and Challenges

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 26, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – On Monday evening, the Ethiopian Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the results of the latest round of the Renaissance Dam negotiations, which were hosted by the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, in which delegations from Egypt and Sudan participated.

The ministry said: “Ethiopia hosted the second round of tripartite negotiations between Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt in the period from 23 to 24 September 2023,” the official Ethiopian News Agency (ENA) reported on Monday.

The ministry added: “This round of talks began with optimism about achieving progress and narrowing differences on the outstanding issues.”

The ministry stated in the statement: “The three countries were able to make progress in identifying issues of potential convergence. It was also agreed to continue tripartite negotiations in October 2023 in Cairo.”

The ministry claimed that “the Egyptian side has advanced a position that undermines the Declaration of Principles Agreement signed in 2015,” according to the Ethiopian agency.

The ministry said, “It is unfortunate that Egypt’s continued insistence on maintaining an agreement dating back to the colonial era, which has prevented tangible progress in the negotiations,” according to what the Ethiopian agency reported.

She added, “Ethiopia confirms that the goal of the current tripartite negotiations is to finalize the guidelines and rules related to the first filling and annual operation of the Renaissance Dam, which guarantees Ethiopia’s rights and accommodates the legitimate concerns of downstream countries.”

The ministry noted, “It is important to emphasize that Ethiopia is deeply involved in tripartite negotiations to ensure the interests of current and future generations of Ethiopians regarding the exploitation of the Nile River. Ethiopia will continue its participation to reach a win-win outcome for all parties through the ongoing tripartite negotiations.”

The impact of interest rates and inflation on Egypt’s economy

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com September 21, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Cairo, Egypt (CNN) – The Central Bank of Egypt decided, on Thursday, to maintain the deposit and lending return rates at the level of 19.25% and 20.25%, respectively, attributing the reason for this to “the consistency of the inflation data with the bank’s expectations,” while bankers believe that Increasing interest rates “is no longer the most appropriate monetary tool to control inflation in the current period,” as it is affected by the foreign exchange shortage crisis.

Egypt faced an economic crisis with the exit of indirect foreign investments and the rise in the import bill in the wake of the global inflation wave and the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war. This crisis affected a shortage in foreign exchange and an increase in the domestic inflation rate to unprecedented levels, which prompted the Central Bank of Egypt to increase interest rates by 1,100 basis points. Since March 2022.

Banking expert Hani Aboul Fotouh said that the Central Bank of Egypt kept the interest rate “as a result of the failure of the interest increase to control the inflation rate or even bring the inflation gap closer to the bank’s targets at 7% (±2 percentage points) during the fourth quarter of 2024.” He justified his statement that the central bank increased the interest rate by 11 percentage points since March 2022, while core inflation reached 40.4% at the end of last August, which indicates that “raising the interest rate is no longer a useful monetary tool to control inflation.”

The Central Bank of Egypt increased interest rates 6 times during the period from March 2022 to August 2023, with a total of 1,100 basis points, divided between 800 basis points during 2022 and 300 basis points in the March and August meetings of the current year.

Abu Al-Futouh added, in exclusive statements to CNN Arabic, that “the reasons for the high inflation rate in Egypt are linked to the foreign exchange shortage crisis, which affected the accumulation of goods in the ports, and the increase in the cost of importing production supplies and raw materials, and with the continued shortage of the dollar, the increase in the interest rate in… Egypt will not be able to control the inflation rate, unlike the United States of America, whose monetary tightening policy succeeded during the past months in controlling inflation, which prompted the US Federal Reserve to stabilize interest rates in its latest meeting.”

According to data from the Central Bank of Egypt, the annual rate of general urban inflation rose to record 37.4% in August 2023 from 36.5% in July 2023, and the annual rate of core inflation witnessed a slight slowdown for two consecutive months, recording 40.7% in July 2023, and 40.4% in August. 2023 compared to 41.0% in June 2023

Hani Aboul Fotouh expected that the Central Bank of Egypt would move to increase the interest rate at the last meeting of the Monetary Policy Committee in 2023, and linked the decision to the government’s ability to treat the main causes of the increase in the inflation rate, and thus increasing the interest rate will have a role in controlling inflation.

The Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee held 6 meetings during 2023, with two meetings remaining. The first is next November 2, and the second is December 21.

Banking expert Tariq Metwally said that fixing the interest rate “comes within the framework of the state’s vision to mitigate the repercussions of the economic crisis on citizens, as the inflation rate is very far from the target of the Central Bank of Egypt and the rate has reached unprecedented levels of more than 40%, which required increasing the interest rate to control it.” Inflation, but the state is adopting a vision to mitigate the negative impact of the economic crisis on the Egyptian citizen.”

This week, the government allocated a new 60 billion pounds ($1.9 billion) to increase the wages of state workers, pensioners, and beneficiaries of the “Solidarity and Dignity” program, which is a cash support program for the neediest groups, in order to ease the burdens on citizens.

Metwally agreed, with what Hani Aboul Fotouh said, that increasing the interest rate is no longer the most appropriate monetary tool to control the inflation rate, which has reached levels very far from the Central Bank’s target, and that increasing the interest rate is mainly linked to the rise in costs as a result of the foreign exchange shortage crisis, adding that The Central Bank preferred to stabilize the interest rate in order to mitigate the repercussions of the crisis on citizens.

Tariq Metwally, in exclusive statements to CNN Arabic, linked whether or not to increase the interest rate during the last two meetings of the Central Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee this year, to improving economic conditions globally, and overcoming the foreign exchange shortage crisis locally, which may prompt the Central Bank to continue stabilizing it until the end of the year. 2023.

The US Federal Reserve and the Bank of England maintained interest rates during their meeting on Wednesday, bringing the interest rate to a range of 5.25 and 5.50%, which is the highest level for the United States in about 22 years.
